Restoring your NX250 headpipe.

When servicing my '89, I took one look at my headpipe and said...you know what...
now is the time to clean that up.
It was a little rusty.
So I decided to remove the shield and take off the back bolt, see the wrench?

you can see in the photo, i've already removed the headpipe/head mounting flange at the exhaust port, and the flange is hanging down on the pipe..

You have to remove the bolt that the socket is on, but to get to it, you must remove the shield.

Here is the tools for the job.

A wire bristle brush and a can of 'derusto' Hi temp rust paint..
any paint exceeding 1500f* degrees will do...for extreme temps.
I prefer the rusty paint,

you don't want to use regular black spray paint, it will not transfer heat properly, carrying heat farther down the exhaust.. nor will it stick as well.

I got lucky and found hi-temp rust paint for like rusty automotive headers..

but i haven't found a pic online yet.

I always use the wire brush and rusty part under a water bath, like a outdoor faucet, to keep down the rust inhaled...yuk
and paint dust is HARMFUL.
Wear a respirator.!

Here is the pipe after the wire brush.

I didn't spend alot of time with it, cause it was kinda in rougher shape than i like..
and I didn't want to get more involved, but basically i decided there was a point where i didn't want to remove any more metal, you know.

Now, it's the first coat.

The pipe didn't want to take the paint, because of the rust.

Ok, I put a little grease on the end of the pipe, just to aid in re-installation.

I hope it goes in better than it came off..

Here it is..
re-installed, but NO scratches..

Yes!

It's too bad it won't stay glossy, it turns exhaust flat black after you crank it...

My advice...crank it and walk inside, make your self a drink...drink it...come back out...
you can look through the window and see smoke as the paint cures from the exhaust gas temperature...
should have got a photo of that.

If we can't get along in one NX thread, are we going to get along with two???

Those unhappy to see this second one, leave it be and post in the first one and ignore this one...

You'll have to excuse my best friend. He's a little slow (on the whole ADV thing).

Fastener problem

Got a problem. I'm going through the bike right now, cleaning and lubing stuff. I've got all the screws off the air cleaner cover but the top middle one. The threaded "hat/insert" on the backside of the cover is just spinning and not loosening. Anyone have a good way to get at it?
