Young Matt's been kind of quiet through limited playing time in spring training... until today. 3-4 with a home run in a s/s game against the A's.

2 for 4 today with a double and a ribbie. Average is just shy of .350. Go kid go.

(To be fair, he did have an error - didn't hurt them apparently.)

"The Giants tied it in the seventh when Buster Posey had an RBI double and scored on an error. Matt Downs had the tiebreaking RBI single in the eighth, though another runner was thrown out trying to score on the same play."

I'm confused? Is he still in A ball? I went looking cause if they were trip A they may be playing our Isotopes. But the San Jose Giants website shows them as class A advanced.

It is cool to know him, hope he keeps moving up.

San Francisco's farm system. Looks like he went from short A to A advanced. . Hope to see him up in AA or AAA later in the year or next year.

If he plays for the Grizzlies you'll need to plan to come to Burque to watch em play. Beer on me.

You bet.

Correct - He went from Short A (also called low A I believe ) two years ago to the high A San Jose team last year. He did a couple of stints in AAA and was invited to spring training camp this year as a non-roster invitee. He's doing pretty good but there's only so many slots with the big boys. Either way, he's making good progress.

Yes he is. It is fun to watch. I knew the mom of a kid who played Single A in the RedSox organization. Didn't make it, but just having some connection made it interesting.

I find the whole minor league thing fascinating. Definetely enjoy going to my 'Topes games.

If you get out here... beer and game on me.

Spring has sprung....

Link

Nice way to end spring training - "Matt Downs doubled and knocked in four runs to help the Giants down the Dodgers, 10-8, in spring training play."

Just got off the phone - he was sent down from the big boys over a week ago and they kept calling him back every day for games. Swung the bat pretty well and I got to see him help turn a triple play just over a week ago - and then hit a double right after that.

Late word from him is that he's headed to Fresno on Sunday so he'll move from A to AAA and more importantly, appears to have made a good impression during spring training having spent all of his time as a non-roster player.

He's a good guy - makes me wonder what happened to the 1,075 players who were drafted ahead of him when he came out of college.

I know the Dodgers play some in the Cactus League. Do the Gints do so too? That would be a fun game to attend if you were in say um Phoenix.

Matt had a grand slam last night - two HR's so far. He's making good contact but his average isn't so good. It's early in the season.

The boy even looks like a baseball player.

Link

LAS VEGAS, NV - Fresno Grizzlies (3-10) second baseman Matt Downs (2) belted a two-out Grand Slam in the top of the third inning as that proved to be the difference in a 6-5 victory over the Las Vegas 51's (3-9) on Tuesday night at Cashman Field.
Downs belted the 'Slam on a 2-0 pitch over the left field wall off Las Vegas starter Dirk Hayhurst (0-2). It was Fresno's first Grand Slam of the year. He's also the first Grizzlie to have two homers this year. The six runs by Fresno was the most they tallied in a game in 2009.

What's the best kind of HR?

The walk-off kind.

From the box score:

HR: Downs (6, 9th inning off Pollok, 2 on, 2 out)

Watch the video around the 49-second point. Sorry - it loads rather slowly.
