Isn't there some rule that they can only be sent back 3? times and then another team can grab their contract?

I seem to recall something like that... think I may have read it in the Isotopes Program. Looking online now, kind of an arcane/tough search (I'm sweating after 4 whole minutes of looking. )

One thing being on the 40 man roster gets Matt is being a member of the Player's Union... plus things like their insurance benefits.

When a player is placed on the 40-man roster he signs a Major League contract. This usually happens when they work their way up through the minor leagues. It is becoming more common to happen when first round draft picks sign a Major League contract right out of college.

Whenever it happens, a team has three (3) option years for the player. That means the play can be sent to the minor leagues during three consecutive seasons from the time they are assigned to the 40-man roster.

For example, Andrew Miller was drafted by the Detroit Tigers last year from North Carolina. When he signed the contract, it was a Major League contract placing him on the 40-man roster. The Tigers are able to send him to the minor leagues during the 2006; 2007; and 2008 seasons---these are his option years. But come 2009 he would have to pass through waivers (becoming available to all teams in inverse order of record) in order to be sent to the minor leagues because of poor performance.

Major League players may still be sent to the minor leagues for their rehabilitation from injury.

Former Major Leaguers that became free agents often sign minor league contracts with Major League teams. This allows the player to play in the minor leagues without counting against the Major League team's 40-man roster. This is what Roger Clemons did this spring during his comeback through the minor leagues before signing a new Major League contract with the Yankees.

Sammy Sosa also signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers during his comeback attempt. He did not sign a new Major League contract until the season started and he was added to the Rangers' 40-man roster.

Luckily, he's young - and can lose weight.

Well, FMTT. If you missed the headlines, here it is fresh off the Internet:

"Giants prospect Angel Villalona a suspect in shooting death"

Hell of a way to end a baseball career - unless he pays someone off of course.

Especially if "that place" tends to drag you back in the gutter. I learned not to hang out too much with the guys I grew up with just a few short years after I left home.

Meanwhile, the SJ Giants had a banner year, 2nd best record in the minors and league champions.

Another spring training, anther step closer.

Source

Frandsen, Lewis on trade block

".....Lewis had a rough 2009 season offensively and defensively. Frandsen's progress was stopped cold by an Achilles tear that cost him the entire 2008 season. Matt Downs seems to have passed Frandsen in the backup middle-infield competition, and the team likes Eugenio Velez and Andres Torres as backup outfielders."

He can't count his chickens yet but Matt's done all that he can to make the club this year.

Well shit....

Matt made the 40-man roster but he was sent to Fresno yesterday. I guess he's an injury and a phone call away from being back in the majors at this point in time.

SO, Matt got a slow start at Fresno and then had two or three good games in a row... couple of doubles, a triple and a homer. Rowand, an outfielder, got hit in the face at the Dodgers game last week and Matt was called up to take his spot.

He's pinch-hit a couple of times and has played in one or two full games.

He just jacked a line drive homer tonight to put the Giants up 2-1 against the Phillies!

His mom sent me a note saying that he's supposed to go back to Fresno this weekend but at least he's making that decision hard on them!

As a die-hard Giants fan, I truly hope that they keep Downs in the bigs and send either Velez or Bowker to Fresno. I'm getting really tired of waiting for either one of those guys to realize their much over-hyped potential.

The homer in the video clip was no cheapy, either. he got it all!
