I used to be able to start my 400exc 2006 in gear when I stalled it on a tricky incline - but the 530 - no way - maybe if I select neutral it'll go.
I recon it's running a bit lean, (pops on overrun) so perhaps I should change needle size ? any suggestions apart from buying the jd jetting kit?
Stock settings for the EU model are:
Needle position 5th from top
Idle mixture screw 1.5 turns
Main jet 180
Idling jet 40
Idle air jet100
Cold start jet 65 (85)
Spill jet 40
Slide stop present

Stock exhaust

Other than that - I had a blast on it today - pullin my arms out all the way just love it

Not sure the correct wording for but
Remove the tip of the silencer and remove (with cutting torch) the 1 inch insert which is reduced to 1/4 inch.

U will be AMAZED and if you think its fast just wait till u open it up........

I also trust ADVrider members much more than the average KTMtalk poster, though there definitely are a few ktmtalk members that really know their stuff.

Bottom line? I will *always* check for a KTM answer on ADVrider before wading into the KTMtalk mire. The site simply isn't what it used to be.
Whatever! Where's all that helpful jetting advice then?

I haven't taken it apart, just shoved my finger down the end and I don't think I have the insert you guys seem to be talking about, I am in France, I have the EU model - no anti smog stuff etcbut I do recon its running lean to pass emmisions tests.....

Try an OCEMP from Sudco needle in the middle clip, 165 main, 60 leak jet, and 42 pilot.

I agree with HodakaGuy that your starting problem is less jetting and more the torque limiter.

Question what does this thing do?

Does the torque limiter potentially require tightening even on brand new bikes? What exactly does that sucker achieve? I ask because I've had to start my 2011 530 by kicking exclusively of late, due to fried electrics behind the speedo, and am puzzled that the kick starter stroke is so damn firm throughgout its travel ie it doesn't gradually increase in resistance up to TDC and then suddenly release. Is this because of the torque limiter?

Thanks,
dazed & confused...

The EU model doesn't have the reduced diameter pipe at the end of the silencer. It does have the throttle stop (mentioned) which limits throttle movement to about a third open. This needs to be replaced. Remove the catalytic thing were the pipe joins the silencer. Remove the screw in thing at the silencer outlet. Thats all you need to do on the exhaust, actually not quite, put some hi temp silicone in the pipe silencer joint while retrieving the catalytic thing.

The carb does benefit from the JD jetting kit. The needles have a better taper than the stock, you get an option of needles that allow for high altitudes and high temps.
The ratio of idle jet and air jet seems wrong, I think originally the idle jet was a 48. Its now a 40, the air jet should be down to about 70 from the 100. JD supply a 42, I plan on going to a 38 with a variable air jet. The main is reduced to a 175 with JD jetting.
Also a idle screw will help alot as the recessed adjuster screw is impossible to get at.

I have cut and pasted what I believe is the standard procedure for dealers in the UK to carry out as part of the pre-delivery inspection, see below:

Restricted (homologated) Version / Open Version

Idle jet :40 / 40

Idle mixture screw1.75 turns open / 1.0 turn open
Main jet :180 / 180

Leak jet: 40 / 40

Needle: OBDYU 4th position from the top / OBDTQ 3rd position from the top

Slide Stopper: YES / NO --> Remove the slide stopper. Replace it with needle set screw

Cold Start Jet: 65 / 85

Cold Start Operation: Lever with cable operation on the handlebar. / Depending on the need, the optionally provided cold start button can be mounted instead of the lever.

Restricted filter carrier mounted / Mount the open filter carrier

Ignition Curve: Restricted ignition curve (plug connector disconnected) / Open ignition curve (plug connector connected)

Gear Ratio: 15 : 45 / 14 : 52

Secondary Air System: Secondary air valve with hose and filter mounted on the cylinder head. / Remove the secondary air system and plug the threaded hole in the cylinder with the provided blocking screw.

Catalytic converter : Catalytic converter mounted between the silencer and the header pipe. / Remove the catalytic converter

Silencer : Restricted with a metal screen at the end of the silencer. / Remove the metal screen from the end of the silencer

Not sure why the info for programming the electronic speedometer isn't in the 2010 XC-W manual... You can download a copy of a different KTM manual that has the info, they all work the same.

These are the pages from my 2006 450 EXC manual:

Awesome, thanks! Do you know if it's possible to re-calibrate for different wheel/tire sizes? Guessing maybe not, because there are different part numbers listed for dirt and SM computer models with one of them checked-off.

Look at page 8.
WS (wheel size)
The display changes and the circumference of the front wheel is briefly dis- played in millimeters (2205 mm corresponds to a front wheel circumference of 21" with production tires).
Afterwards the display will return to the previous display mode.

If you weren't already aware, you can also get a KTM handlebar remote switch that allows you to access all the functions more easily. Though it's a pricey little sucker. A few different versions... For the 2008-2011 dirt bikes, I think you want KTM part #54814073000
