Exactly....the auto decompression mechanism works on the '09 cam
not on the '08...not to say it can't be started but you'll have a hard time
at best....

It still works, but is less effective on some bikes (usually the internet ones). My friend's bike has 230 hours on it's backwards cam (I checked), and it has no trouble starting. . . . well, not entirely true, his 5 year old battery finally packed it in. If it ain't broke. . . . .

edit Michhub, I'm not being argumentative, I'm just stating that while it is a well documented issue, it has a lesser affect on some. If you have trouble , change it, if not, I don't see the point.

Yeah, we've owned a lot of those bikes and some of the 08's were real finicky and some of them started and ran as well as any of our newer bikes. No idea why.

Mine was an easy to start but I replaced it anyways. From all the reading I've done, always go with the latest year parts as KTM seems to have been improving little things every year.

One is for the Northern Hemisphere and one for the Southern hemisphere.

My 2011 530 starts "kerpow" quick after sitting a while, better then my old DRZe which hated to sit over a couple weeks and then be asked to start.
Ran the battery down a few times trying, then put a kicker kit on it to be sure.
Then realized it was a clunker and sold it to get the 530.

Good Decision!

I'm still searching whether the 2011 camshaft fits onto my 2008 530excr.
Anybody knows?

Old Cam info.

I have the '08 450 exc with the original camshaft. What I have found is that the valve settings need to be at the tighter end of the adj. range to really have a chance to work. When that happens on mine it starts fine. There is a small lobe that rises on the left exhaust cam lobe to lift the valve enough to reduce compression. After the rpms spin up the small lobe drops away.

Yes. Looking at KTMtalk, there is a slightly different cam profile (something about smoother power delivery, softer?), and the '11 cam is more expensive according to people over there, but I haven't looked to see the difference in $. The general concensus is the '09 is the one to get, although any year will fit, just slightly difference lift/ duration for 'smoother power' in the 10-11.

This link may not open unless you are logged in, but it is the 12 page thread regarding the problem.
