For those who haven't seen it, this is is what the fuel pump looks like when it's installed.

There really isn't much to it. Just remove the allen head bolts and it drops right out.

Here is the old one next to the new one.

I re-used the stock o-ring and haven't had an issue yet. Putting it all back together is just as easy as taking it apart. Put back together it fired right up and has been running great ever since

Now . . . somebody asked if I'd take my old one apart to see if maybe we could just carry the tiny little electric pump as a back-up and field strip it instead of having to try and pack a whole extra fuel pump assembly.

Short answer = NO

Well . . . maybe, but it isn't really meant to come apart after initial assembly.

Let me explain . . .

First - some shots around the old pump

A shot of the electrical connections.

These pop off without issue.

Then I unhooked the low fuel sensor.

The whole low fuel sensor assembly comes right off. Makes working on it easier with that out of the way. Now comes the hard part and the reason why I don't think this would be a good idea in the field . . . this thing isn't meant to come apart. Yes, there are just little clips that hold the "cage" on, but the clips don't push in and you really have to force the outer part out in order to unhook them. I wound up cracking it in a few places forcing it open.

Once forced open however, the fuel pump itself slides right out.

There is a little o-ring that goes around the top. Don't lose it.

Here's the actual part number to end all the confusion as to whether or not we share a fuel pump with the Zuma guys . . .

Fuel filter connection. This won't want to come off without the possibility of some damage, either. I tried prying on it a little bit, but since I was getting really close to breaking something I gave up.

Just for the hell of it, I disassembled the top part. I'll be honest and say I have no idea what this does . . . but here's how you take it apart. This came apart and went back together in a snap. No problems.

More o-rings you don't want to loose.

Tiny o-ring inside

After the helluva time I had trying to disassemble the pump in the first place, it becomes quite clear that it was designed to be put together, not taken apart. It all went back together in a matter of seconds.

Anyway . . . to sum up . . . it's a royal pita to take it apart and you'll most likely wind up cracking something in the process.

Hope that helps.
Did anyone notice the pump says "MADE IN CHINA"? I'm depressed now, I can't believe they would use a non Japanese part.

Right here! We are still looking for a stator for Dingweed. Yamaha USA has one, (in Wisconsin) we just need to get it. 3d7-81410-00-00 They are willing to send it to a dealer in the States and then to Canada. It will be next week B4 they are good to go that way.

Maybe I missed it, but have you determined the cause of the crispy stator? Don't wanna burn up another one.

Hey all…great thread!!!…need some advice...hopefully OK to post this here...

I sold my CRF450R last summer back in TX before we moved back up to MT…I now need something that can handle the trails at pipestone ohv with the kiddos and something to dualsport a bit on pavement to get to forestservice and singletrack nearby with my buddy.

I have been looking at all the usual suspects...crf450x (which my buddy rides and it is easy to tag here in MT) wr450f, ktm450exc, xr400, etc etc etc…but I keep coming back to the wr250r!

I am 44yo, 200lbs, avg riding ability, used to do MX and some serious trails when I was younger but now mainly looking to have fun with kiddos and also explore a bit locally and possibly do something like WESTFEST/MT1000 this year

So my question is would the wr250r be the bike to get?? I would most likely put it on a diet and do some mods like done at rickramsey.net, bigdog, and the highfive/krabill site (great sites btw!).

I did find a NEW leftover ’08 at a nearby dealer with zero miles for $5079 OTD and a diff dealer has a NEW ’11 for $6199 OTD …any thoughts? Seems like the bikes are similar between years? I guess the only worry is the fuel pump on the ’08 but that would be covered under warranty if need be.

Anything addl to try to negotiate from either dealer? We lost our local yammie dealer now the nearest one is over hour away.

Anything else to consider?

Thanks…Bill

Oh, yeah, welcome, and "Hey! Watch it man, there's a beverage here."

Update...

Scott and Mark are on their way to a dealer about two hours away from Smithers. Scott has got a fresh charge on his battery. The dealer has a '08 used WRR on the floor that Scott is going to buy and take the stator from. He'll have the new stator shipped from the US and install it on the way home and sell the bike back to the dealer.

Not the easiest/cheapest solution but it gets them back on the road quicker.

Not sure of the possible causes for frying a stator, but hopefully it won't repeat itself.

Thanks everyone for the ideas and help.

John

Wow.. that's hardcore.. It's crazy the dealer won't just take the stator off, charge him an arm & leg, then when the new stator arrives at his shop, refund him minus installation. But whatever works.. hahah.. you never know .. they might need more parts from that bike.. but.. well. .I doubt it

Thx for the updates John

Update for Dingweed and Bigdog. At lunch they were on the highway to Terrace about 2hrs west of Smithers. Dingweed scooped a used WR at Ken's Marine and they are going to pull the stator. They have a brand new one coming out of the US to replace it. We found the only one available in North America and it is being shipped ASAP red label over night yada yada. It'll still be next week sometime for the new one to arrive. Meanwhile these guys are rollin!

They think the stator was fried using a different battery that had problems.
Thanks for all the help! Sam.

Do you know if it was one of those fancy Shorai Lithium batteries or not?

That's what you get for putting 3 million miles on it!

Although I went with a KLX, I still like to chat with you guys. The WRR and the KLX is pretty simular, and the folks that ride them are just good folks!

I came within an inch of getting the blue bike and ended up with a red one. Don't hate, I still bleed blue! And red!
