Whelp, burned my stator out at ~48,000 miles.

At first I thought it was the regulator/rectifier because the stator resistances checked out per the manual. Bought a new R/R, but DC voltage was still low. Eventually I had the bright idea of checking the alternating voltage - one set was low.

So if you are having issues with your charging system, make sure you check those voltages before you order those parts!

Luckily, replacing the stator was pretty trivial in terms of work. Just an hour or two, start to finish, including cleaning all the crud off my engine cases.

Am I doing something wrong?

Suggestions?

The expansion nuts suck even when they're the right size. I've seen and experienced laying the bike down, the hand guard pivots out of the way and your lever bends/breaks.
I have cyrca hand guards and just upgraded my bars to Pro Taper with the threaded insert from HDB. No expansion nut, threads right into the bar. It's more money upfront, but it's a much better setup and I don't have to worry about broken levers anymore.

I have ordered blanks from this guy a couple time: http://www.motorcyclekeys.com/

I think he is semi-retired now, but may still sell key blanks. Nice guy, sends blanks by USPS.

It may be cheaper in the long run, rather than riding around looking for a place with the right blank.

Came into this thread bout a week ago and read about 60 pages on the front end and 50 on the rear. Im curious how many of the guys who bought this bike in 08 and were talkin our ears off about how good it was, ie novector and high five to name a few, how many of them still own this bike, and if they dont anymore, what they switched to?

Is there anything out now that compares to the wrr in all around greatness?

Phew! When you do I'll save a few of the articles from your page as they're very helpful.

Thanks!

I heard back from the smarter folks in charge . . . they're just moving domains around. Nothing is lost. It should all be settled here shortly.

...so tempted by the SM wheels but will put that off until I decide how to reconfigure my stable of bikes.

Good luck with the sale!

Two tricks to use.

First, tighten the bolt in the insert out of the bar end in order to spread the ferrule. Just don't over do it. Then loosen it up and try it. The idea is to expand it enough to have tension against the inside of the bar when pushed into the bar end.

Second, it may help to pull the bolt as you tighten it in order get it to grab. Wedge a small screwdriver between the bolt and the hand guard to pull the bolt out while tightening it with the hex key. You want to keep the handguard tight to the bar end and just pull the bolt. As mentioned a little lube on the threads could help too, just use it sparingly.

If you're pushing on the hex key when trying to tightening it, you're taking the tension off of the ferrule and it will just spin.

I've been using the Cycras for years and even though the inserts aren't as good as the threaded ones they have been working fine for me.

Went to the local bike store where they had a 2012 WR250R marked down to $5700 to see if they would be willing to deal. $5500 is about the best they would do but they wanted to add $400 for "freight" and "handling." Was looking at ~6600 out the door. No thanks, especially since used ones can be found for under $4k. Time to start hunting.

so here's my 2013 with some new additions that you guys might be interested in.

the 5XC (yamaha YZ 250) footpegs came in today. they fit perfectly and now include a slight cut out so the peg wont hit the rear brake lever when folded up.. the pegs are great. as good as expensive after market ones.. cost was $80 for the pair from parts pit stop including the springs... good and wide, and nicely made from solid looking stainless steel..

also got my highway dirt bikes set up fitted. by far the biggest improvement for this bike. feels so much more planted and stable now, and they already saved my levers in a slight layover yesterday in the mud (the stock tyres suck for wet mud btw). i went for Renthal YZ bend bars and the high risers (2.5 inch i think) .. they feel great.. much more comfortable for me than the stock ones.

my skid plate should be here this week too..

ive also got an eager beaver 3 circuit system wired up currently powering the gps but soon a double usb socket and the powerlet in the HDB clamp for heated gloves.

see no contact.
