Pardon me asking a dumb question ...

But do these tarps actually shed water?

Or are they like most tents where they shed water just as long as it doesn't actually rain?

The Kelty poles seem well made but a bit on the bulky side. Any other smaller diameter/smaller packing suggestions?

Most tarps are either PU coated or silnylon, waterproof.

Cool2

OK...I'm looking for another pole. I bought the last Kelty tarp pole they had at REI and Moosejaw doesn't have anything either. Yeah, I can order another Kelty pole but..I was not liking the $40 for that pole at REI so adding shipping onto that isn't gonna fly. Not just yet anyway. Plus, the Kelty pole is kinda large diameter wise.

Anyone got a good idea for a cheaper alternative? I know ownST1100 has a neat trick up his sleeve for this one but... Hek, I'd buy a complete pos tent at $19.95 if it just came with a decent pole setup.
