Well, I've been struggling with a nuvi 500 for going on like 3 months now.

When I first got it, the device had numerous issues with Batts and other stuff.

Got a new one. That one I ran an update, the net connection died and the Topo got nuked.

Garmin had no idea what was wrong with it, for some reason the update doesn't know it's supposed to have TOPO on the unit, and they had me send it back and got a new one.

They setup a new update on my garmin, and it too nuked the topo.


This time, the guy was pretty helpful, and I downloaded a new
gmapprom1.img supplemental map file. So Finally after I dunno 8(?) hours on the phone with them and three months I have a nuvi that sort of does what it says on the box it'll do.

But...

Basecamp only has city nav map on it. I can read the DEM map on the device, but it's just shaded mountins, no trail or road data at all. and I'd like to have the same maps to try and actually plan a route.

I have a 60CSX with City Navigator Maps on the micro SD card in the unit.

While playing with Basecamp, I notice that the trails on the SD card don't show up in Basecamp's mapping. Only paved roads & highways. Do I need to "unlock" the maps on the SD card and import them into Basecamp? If so, can I then start putting together routes on Basecamp, and upload them to the GPS unit?

I know these are dumb questions, but I've screwed with this long enough to know when help is needed. Thanks!

What version of BaseCamp? What version of City nav?

Have you zoomed in to at least the 0.2 mile scale -- that's when the trails appear.

Also have you selected trails in the line preferences?

Because you purchased City Nav on the SD card, you will not be able to import them into Basecamp on your computer. If you had gotten the DVD, you would have been able to install it on your computer and then put those maps on your 60CSX.

Right now, your Basecamp will only have the base maps.

So...do you have all the maps installed in both BaseCamp and on your device? If so, you have to select what map you want to view on either. On your device, you have to hide the City Nav map to view the Topo one. At leas that is the way it is on my 60Cs.

Thanks. That's what I thought. Seemed too easy. Looks like I may need the DVD. When using the DVD, do I just leave the City Nav SD card in the unit?

Gooood question. You could...and just not import the map from BaseCamp onto your GPS unit. Or, just run down to Sears, Best Buy, Target, etc and get yourself a cheap blank SD card. I got a 4 GB for not all that much.

I thought the latest version of BaseCamp could READ the maps on the GPS unit while it was connected to the computer. IOW, while connected to the unit, the maps will appear in BaseCamp and you can plan on them but when you disconnect they will disappear from BaseCamp.

I would be happy if that was true. My original problem was that the dirt roads that show up on City Nav maps don't appear on BaseCamp. To me, what good is BaseCamp if I can only plan routes that are on pavement? I am sure someone can point out the error of my ways, right?

Yes, that is how Basecamp 3.0.4 works now - it sees the maps on your gps as long as it's connected via usb. Serial connections need not apply.

Here's part of the description from the download page I have linked above:

BaseCamp will recognize all MapSource products except BlueChart.
BaseCamp does not work with serial GPS devices.

Version 3.0.3 added the feature, described this way:

Added ability for BaseCamp to attempt reading all Garmin map images (.img files), regardless of name, from removable media.
