Gadget Boy,

I just understood why you asked what we are riding. I just re-read the intro I wrote this morning and realized that in the rush to make the best possible use of the slow internet connection we have here in Ecuador I ended the intro with "We got rid of it in El Salvador". Sounded kind of ominous but what I meant to say is we got rid of the tool cylinder attached to the bash plate!

As for the bike, we love the thing. Especially when it isn't getting repaired!

If you see a Red 1200 GS heading north somewhere in your travels in South America with New York plates on it; Wave GS grins is on his way north from your destination. I will send him a link to your thread. Who knows maybe
you will meet during your travels.

Ride Safe

nice work...

It reminds me of the trip i just finished...we rode some of the same roads. Are you in agreement that the roads around Todos Santos are some of the most amazingly curvy and fun ever?

Stay with it--we're all looking forward to the rest!

Hi Lasvegasrider,

We appreciate the offer of assistance. Hopefully the duct tape will be enough to get us to India but if not...

Hi Evan,

Could´nt agree more. But on the day we left Todos Santos it was pouring rain. I`m sure you remember how steep some of those hills were!

Max!

We´ve been following your thread each day. I still can´t believe you made it all the way down in that kind of weather!
By the way, Marie is itching to shave her head again. Looks like tomorrow it all goes. Í`ll see if I can get some pics (prior approval required of course)

Stay safe!!

I need to mention that our bike suffered from transmission sweat from day one of the trip. In Guatemala the problem got a bit worse so we made the decision to find a BMW dealership in El Salvador. We got across the border and rode into San Salvador without any problems. We even managed to find the dealership without too much difficulty! After talking with the head mechanic we decided to simply keep an eye on the problem and hope the bike would make it to Costa Rica where we knew there was another dealership.

So we kicked around in El Salvador to see the sights. The first shot is of a church in the town of Santa Ana....

And this is in the north of the country near the town of Sushitoto...

After visiting a bit we decided that it was time to go and headed to Honduras via the El Poy crossing. This has got to be the slowest crossing we have ever used. The process took an agonizing 4 hours to complete.
So with about 15 minutes to go I decided to take a look at our leak. You know, just to make sure everything was still kind of OK. Turns out our little leak decided to become a torrent on the drive from Sushitoto to the border.
So we backtracked out of the whole "going into Honduras and leaving El Salvador administrative process" and made our way back to San Salvador.
We got to the dealership just in time.

The bike was taken apart and within a week we had a new outer rear main seal. To kill some time during the repairs we went to the beach....

After the repairs were done we headed straight for Honduras. We decided to try the El Poy crossing once again. The logic was that we were now familiar with the process and it would take less time (it did not). Little did we know at the time that we would be returning to the same dealership a short while later....
