You know what they say...

You know what they say. Photoshop is for those that can't get the picture right the first time.

Well, not that I promote photoshop to "fake" pictures or anything, but those who say such things are most certainly not photographers!

It certainly helps, but .... garbage in = garbage out.

Let me defend my shot then. It was a spur of the moment shot, with the rider looking downward onto his map. I didn't ask him to set up for the shot, so the composition is not spot on (the bottom of the motorcycle is cut off). However, it got what I wanted in the shot. The winding road in the background, the skid mark in the gravel, the mountains and the different colors of the vegetation. I then added vignetting to draw attention on the rider and his bike. I didn't have my graduated neutral density filters, so darkening the sky using the filter wasn't an option. My lense doesn't do enough vignetting that I wanted on its own so I added some in photoshop. I then adjusted my white balance subtly by adjusting the levels slightly. I made the photo black and white for a dramatic effect, sharpening the rider and his bike to bring out details, grab the viewers attention. Sharpening is something every photographer does to an extent when dealing with RAW files. Because the sun is behind the rider, I lost detail in his face. I didn't want to do HDR because aside from the darkened subject, the rest of the exposure was good. So I added a filter to the subject to lighten his face without adding too many noise artifacts.

The fact is, PS is an essential part of the vast majority of photos you see today. The reason why you see so many good shots today is because PS has helped correct the WB, the loss of detail, the blown out highlights etc. I am a rider, I don't have time to bring out a mirror, an external flash to brighten the backlit areas, I don't have time to choose between my hard and soft GND filters in certain situations. I chose my exposure, my aperture and my ISO and shot. In such a case, I made the photo into an artistic interpretation as opposed to a journalistic shot because I wanted to help produce a story behind it.

The story of the shot is up to the imagination but here is my take on it. He is in the right 1/3 of the frame because I wanted to give a feel of the road traveled behind him, the landscapes he has seen and the sensation of 'forwardness.' It is a story being written and his weathered face and grit on the motorcycle hopefully reflects this. He is looking downward at a what the viewer can imagine is a map, writing out the rest of his journey. And finally, he is a rider, like you or me and I posted it here because I think we can all relate to this same situation.

So I'm sorry you don't like the photo, that's your opinion. However, I would appreciate any criticism apart from purely shitting on my work, as you aptly demonstrated above. A PM wouldn't be bad, so that it doesn't clutter up the thread, but I thought this post was warranted so I could defend my work.
