Da Buell is alive and well again.

Did about 275 miles yesterday and she is running better than ever. No CEL and smoother than ever. Even got a little dirt riding in- my pirate costumed friends were pissed.

Why do you build me up (Build me up)
Buellcup baby just to
let me down (Let me down)
And mess me around
And then worst of all (Worst of all)
You never call baby
When you say you will (Say you will)
But I love you still
I need you (I need you)
More than anyone darlin'
You know that I have from the start

So build me up (Build me up)
Buellcup
Don't break my heart
I'll be over at ten
You tell me time and again
But you're late
I wait around and then
I went to the door
I can't take any more
It's not you
You let me down again

Baby Baby
Try to find a little time
And I'll make you happy
I'll be home
I'll be waiting beside the phone
Waiting for you.

Why do you build me up....
To you I'm a toy
But I could be the boy
You adore
If you'd just let me know
Although you're untrue
I'm attracted to you
All the more
Why do I need you so Baby Baby.....

ooh ooh ooh
Why do build me up .....

I've been working my tail off on the new place, and the rest of today is mine, all mine!
But, I don't have anyone to share a ride with, which is what I really wanted. If anyone is up for a ride, I would love a chance to get out and go somewhere. I only have the DRZ anymore, so high speed freeway stuff is a chore, but it goes as well as any GEO.

Drop a line, I am kickstand up in about an hour or so (ADVrider time), I don't have a curfew and I have a hammock. I may have a job interview tomorrow though.

You free time people are killing me.

I know, I'll run to the bank and deposits some pay checks. That always makes me feel better.

I've been working. On the house.
But, I haven't had a day off in weeks.

I think I am getting the short end of the stick. My wife calls me from the beach the other day. She is on a work trip, but she still gets Sunday off. At the beach.

I have a plaque at the cottage that says...

Big Day!

Well, big evening I guess is a better description. After final bolt check/fluid check/happy with what I've added and adjusted check, I took the new-to-me old bike out on it's shakedown run. On the way past the Ogden airport it hit the big 2K:

I ran it down the freeway, gradually gaining speed and listening for concerns. Finally got it up over 75, and all still felt well so I exited in North Ogden and pulled over to check the bearings. Everything was warm, nothing was hot. I waddled my way on up to the North Ogden Canyon Pass, and lugged my way up doing 30 mph in 4th gear while rolling on and off the throttle, just asking for it to balk or bark...but it chugged along just fine. At the top of the pass I pulled over, shut it down, and gave everything a re-check. Oil good. Tires aren't chunking. Lights still work. Nothing loose, nothing leaking. So, onward!

I ran down to Liberty, and went out to the Avon pass to try it in the dirt. Everything performed welll, but I got a bit of a noise coming from the front end. Speedo needle is hopping, so the cable is the suspect. Everything performs fine in the dirt, so I head back the way I came. I stopped for a picture. This is the same spot I took the first picture of my first dual-sport bike (2007 DR650SE) on it's inagural shakedown ride years ago. It just seemed kinda right:

On the way back I drop in to visit the previous owner of the bike. 5 minutes and a blast of WD-40 and the speedo cable goes quiet again. I hit the road home in the dark, and find the OEM 6 volt lighting adequate, but far from impressive.

All said and done, I'm happy with the bike. After I got home I gave it the once-over again, and everything appears great. My next projects are going to be lights and luggage. On high beam the headlight is okay, but on low beam it's almost worthless. In fact, on two different occasions tonight I had people pull out in front of me on 1900 North up where there are few street lights, and I think it's just because the people don't see me well. Perhaps the dim light makes them think I am way back there. I started driving around with the high beam on all the time, and no one else pulled out in front of me again. Anyone know of any decent 6V lighting upgrades? I'd also like ot add a 12V socket (for GPS/phone) but 6V to 12V converters are expensive!

I am also seeing that luggage may be a bit of a struggle. This being a somewhat "clean classic" bike I don't want to dork the bike up much by welding stuff on to it. Today I talked with Dirtbagz, but they don't make frames for it to fit their bags. They make stuff for the XR frames, but not for the XL. I talked to Wolfman, and they are sure their tank bag will fit, but are not sure about any of their enduro bags or saddle bags. Seems that the luggage is designed for mono-shock bikes. Since I have shocks in the way of the luggage mounting position, and my passenger pegs are on the swing arm and not the frame (thus not stationary), they are hesitant to say yes they have something that will surely work. The same applies for Nomad Rider. They invited me to come by their shop and try some things on, but they don't have anything that they KNOW will fit the XL500S. Both Nomad Rider and Wolfman sounded excited to find out if they could make something work, but both places could only say "we can try something and see". If anyone has experience in this area, feel free to share your vast knowledge.

Ultimately, I feel the bike is ready to do a serious ride and I'm excited about it. It'll never be a race bike, nor does it handle superbly, nor is it particualrly light or nimble, nor is it a powerhouse like the 600s were, but I think it will be reliable and hecka fun...which is what is important to me.
