I started out thinking I would get a 1300 ST or an FJR. I rode the ST 1300, the FJR 1300, a Gold Wing 1800 GL, a BMW RT 1200, BMW K 1300 GT, BMW K 1300 LT, and finally the BMW K1600 GTL.

The Honda ST 1300 was solid. It offerred excellent wind protection and a smooth ride at interstate speeds. It lagged a little when going from 65 mph to 90 mph. Although not the most agile bike, I felt confident in the turns. Absolutely no bells or whistles. The ABS bikes are hard to find used, and new ones are 18K if you can locate one. I would need to add another 2K in aftermarket parts (top case, throttle lock, heated grips, new seat), plus time, to make it compare to the BMWs. The engine is bulletproof.

The Gold Wing was not as comfy as I would have hoped, was much more agile than I could have imagined, but was utterly gutless considering it was an 1800...even without passenger and luggage. You need to make an appointment to pass a truck and trailer. Very expensive, and I think it's mandatory to ride with those silly half helmets with the microphone...and flags waving from the bike. The damn things still come with CD-changers .

The K1300 bikes were buzzy at 80 mph, poor wind protection, and pulled to the right whenever I twisted the throttle; although they were responsive when the throttle was twisted. Sadly disappointed because you can pick one up for pretty cheap...now I see why.

The RT was the most agile bike I rode. I can see why moto-cops ride these. You could turn a 180 in a tea cup. It offered amazing wind protection with the stock shield. It was also smooth as butter at 80-90 mph, and lots of standard accoutrements (heated everything, ride-by-wire cruise control, audio jack for ipod, adjustable everything, traction control, ESA) to make the long day more enjoyable. Power was as expected for the R-bikes...dial a wheelie if you please. Pleasantly surprised with this bike. Other than a top case, it had all the extras I wanted.

The FJR was just crap (IMO). I could not imagine riding to work on that bike, let alone a full day of interstate. There was wind buffeting, it was gutless, buzzy as a 2-stroke, and uncomfortable. Maybe it is brilliant in the turns??? What few turns I encountered, however, left me feeling less than confident on the FJR. Like the ST, it was also bare-bones in the accessory department.

My top choices would have been the Honda ST 1300 or the BMW RT 1200. However, the salesman insisted I ride the K1600 GTL, the argument was all over. Fucking brilliant bike!

Although not as agile as the RT or ST, it bitch-slapped them all in every other category that was important to me...except price. I finally found one used with low miles, with a bunch of extras added (including a $1300 Schuberth helmet already set up with Bluetooth and comm, new tires, luxury package, GPS). The price was higher than a new ST, but less than a new RT, and already has all the farkles.
Interesting review. As you may remember, I own an 03 ST with 73k miles now. Yes, things have changed in 10 years. The K1600 set a new hi water mark in many areas. Good that you were able to find a clean used specimen. I have to say I am surprised about the positive review of the ST relative to the competition. They definitely have a following & I can not complain about mine. I keep thinking I need to replace it but I can't figure out what with.

Go eat some miles!

I use a Marc Parnes Visual Alert, but recently picked up a bluetooth thing so I can hear it in the helmet. Will have to see which I prefer.

Check the Escort Ebay store. About $165 for a refurbished one with
6-month warranty.

Enjoy the new bike!
I decided to go with the Adaptiv TPX rather than back-engineer an automobile detector. There are lots of add-ons including a laser jammer if I find I am still getting snagged. Transferring it to an automobile is easy as well.

Will be interested in hearing your thoughts after you have used the Adaptiv. I don't personally know anyone that has one. Will also be interesting to see how prevalent laser is in your area. Here in Utah, the UHP has radar in every trooper's car, however if they want to use laser, they need to check a gun out from the section office. Some of the bigger sections, like Salt Lake, might have 2-3 lasers available. Sounds like each laser has to be returned at the end of a shift. With 14-15 such offices, there probably aren't much more than 25-30 lasers in the UHP. With some of the rural agencies being strapped for money, I don't see radar going away soon.

Will you be riding that new bike to Utah anytime soon?

I can probably help out with transportation and such if anyone is interested. The GSA is a smoking deal. Had I not just pulled the trigger on a GTL, I would be all over this bike.
Any specs on the 690?

The reviews on all the devices are mixed, but at least this one is waterproof, shockproof, and comes with an LED indicator.

I may be coming to Utah in July on this bike.

I couldn't find a Connie to test ride, but would have liked to try one. I also couldn't find a Triumph, Ducati, or Guzzi to try.

I wouldn't make my worst enemy ride an FJR for any appreciable distance...but since it's you

Good to know. I am pretty law-abiding in metro areas. It's the counties whose entire law enforcement is financed by speeding tickets that I worry about. I can't imagine them having lasers given the cost.

?? Camping In Wasatch NF / Logan area

Thought I'd post here instead of starting a new thread.

Can any Utard inmates recommend a couple of dispersed/primitive camping sites in the Wasatch NF, east of Logan?

Hey, I want to give a big shout out to BigK for the ride yesterday. What a blast! I think we determined that I really (really, really) need to air down and that I probably shouldn't go on any GISKev rides anytime soon - if I want to live anyway

Looking forward to getting out again soon!

9,500 miles in 2 weeks. It's an FJR thing. I don't have time to explain it to you Beemer pussies.

I just picked up a touring bike, and the last time I did a lot of touring, I also did a lot of ticket paying.

I pick this up at the end of the month:

The boys on 94th South brought in the truck last year and I got an hour or so on the GT. Excellent bike that will not hurt you to pile on the miles. It almost seems like cheating to call it a moto.....I sold my K12RS last summer after my first speeding ticket in 45 years...triple digits was just too easy on that bike and even if you have the radar/laser detector, I predict LEO papers coming to a wallet near you......

I keep drooling on the new Trophy 1200 and the C14, but I know that's going to be a HUGE issue with the speeding.....my job doesn't really lend itself to not having a license,,,,,

That said, I really can't wait to see that new 1190R coming out later this year....
