Warp9man and I made a run out to Corrine and the Golden Spike Historical site last weeked and spotted a possible fun ride. Apperantly there is a trail system along the old railroad beds that runs north of the Salt Lake and around toward Monticello then down to Wendover. It claims to be a 4wd road, which ought to be fine for bigger bikes we figure, so we are thinking it might be worth a run now that it's not so blasted hot.

Anyone done this one before?

I have a GPX file for the route. You could always go around the lake on the north side to wendover, then head back to slc via the PET.

We hit the part of a old rail road grade by the north side of the lake. It was pretty cool.

IIRC you did this in 2 days? Mav and I have been around the lake(and a little bandito cutting through the impact area) one day, and we did another PET ending up in Wendover and some awful slab back to SLC(geared WAY to low on our DRZ's). Since Mav wants a break from the sand, maybe I can get her up for a 4am start.

We are thinking one big day, the dirt is mostly fast stuff, but we haven't ridden the grade to Montello(Not Monticello,lol). It's a pretty big day though with aprox 1/3 dirt. This google map doesn't have all the miles on the grade, just a quickie for mileage, I can shave off some miles cutting of at Lucin, and no fuel at Ibapah on Sunday(and maybe other days).

The PET part is what I actually rode, in one day. It's the loop you described, SLC-Wendover-SLC(slab via i-80).

But it also includes the route that bajaworx planned for the north trip back over the great salt lake. He did the first part w/ me in one day, then circumnavigated the great salt lake on the way back on the second. He was on a KLR, so it must be an easy ride!

I am presently in Monticello, UT at an internet cafe. It's freaking cold as a witch's tit so I am loading up on coffee.

I rode out that way from N. Ogden to the Golden Spike Historical Site (GSHS) and then out to the Spiral Jetti and back. Was a good ride and have thought about going all the way around to Wendover. Only problem, as you probably already know, is the KLR Jr. I'd have to carry some extra petrol to get me all the way to Wendover. There are several ghosttowns along that route, well sites where towns used to be anyway, and I'd like to check some of them out.

I bought a book at the GSHS by the Wilderness Press called Utah Byways, 65 of Utah's Best Backcountry Drives and this dirt road (byway) is listed in there along with the other 64 that I want to tackle. It's a good book and includes maps and other information on each road.
