I thought you would have info on that one. Yes, it may have been '76 although I though it was earlier than that. No matter it was my first chance to see that sport in person.

Sidecar cross?
Hi all
I am a solo rider with little skill and even less mechanical abilities. Anyway, i recently have my 1981 XL500S running after sitting for 15 years. I want a offroad light weight side hack for it. I have been reading and looking and watching... Where in the world could one find, beg, or steal some sort of hack for this? My monkey friends will not require anything fancy just a little suspension and a rail to hold on to. I have thought about building it myself but don't have the skills or tools. Also, i think i could finally win a trophy if i showed up at the local track with vintage dual sport side-hack? Where are all the old side hack race bikes? |

Rklein,
I have an 82 XL500R that I thought about hacking too but I ended up throwing one on the 1150GS instead. Dauntless makes a dualsport hack that would probably work on that 500 real nice but I'm thinking that a subframe is going to be the real problem with it. http://www.dauntlessmotors.com/Sidec...ro_sidecar.htm

Thank you RED. I think the DR missed the question cause a $3000 side car for $100 motorcycle is not cheap.

well you can steal a shopping cart and strap it on with hose clamps- it will be cheap and fun(to watch-take videos) but it won't be safe and it won't last very long. Just because you have a $100 bike doesn't mean you can slap together a safe rig for pennies.
With limited skills and limited experience you have limited options. A used Jupiter, Velorex or Sputnik would work well for you but you still need good mounting hardware. If you get lucky finding a cheap used sidecar and can find someone with experience near you to help put it together you might be able to get it done around $1000, maybe less. If you use this off road at all it needs to be well done, and even street only puts some pretty high loads on your mounts so for safety it needs to be done right.

Al Wenzel (CA) has 4 MX racing sidecars for sale - 2 are KX500 bikes going for a touch under $4K.

Wow, for around $4000 someone could have a kickass offroad sidehack. A custom framed, complete rig!!! And it would spank the crap out of anyone's Russian iron.
Why doesn't someone jump on that? |
