Nevada WWII Airbases

Nevada is littered with old WWII airstrips. But, not many of the old hangers are still standing like this one near Tonopah.

He was also the origin of the saying, "or my name is Mudd", if I recall correctly...

Yep. Yellow Fever. The guy giving the tour said he gets descendants come out to visit periodically that try to argue his innocence with him.

You know, some industrious person is going to buy that, strip it down, and sell all those boards to a high end contractor in NY who will resell those aged boards as flooring for affluent housing and make a not-so-small fortune per board foot!

...I'm just saying! ;)

Some of the bunkers at Cap Blanc Nez,France. This is where the germans were expecting the invasion.

With clear weather, one can see the white cliffs of Dover accross the english channel (it's 34 kms wide, although it looks less when you are standing there)

Another bunker at Cap Gris Nez (the narrowest point of the english channel)

I'd love to have an old airplane hangar out in the middle of nowhere (with new tin on the roof). Park the camper inside and sleep in it, and all that floor space for vehicles, toys, and projects. Hmmmm.

I love this thread. I don't have many pics, but this link gives the history of the fort. http://www.dauphinisland.org/fort.htm & http://andy_bennett.home.mindspring.com/gaines.html

My wife & the bikes with the fort in the back ground

Just across Mobile Bay is Fort Morgan. Here's a good link about it http://andy_bennett.home.mindspring.com/morgan.html

This ferry takes you across from Fort Gaines

Here's a funny sign next to Fort Gaines
