Fan not working - earth fault?

After bashing through some sand the other day I noticed the temp had got up to 5 bars and the fan hadn't come on (it normally would). On the way home I noticed the brake/back light didn't work. - bear with me here.... Checked the wiring diagram and they are both on fuse circuit 4, but the horn + flashers which are also on circuit 4 still worked mmmm. Checked the fan - working when shorted to earth so power is getting to the fan. Power getting to the brake light switch as well.

Theory 1 - The earth return from the temperature switch is common with the rear light/brake earth and it's broken/corroded somewhere? The brown earth wire from the temp switch disappears into the loom and may come out near the ECU. The rear light switch seems to go into the same area.

Theory 2 - Temperature switch not working and its just a coincidence that the rear brake/light doesn't work as well. Both seemed to happen around the same time though?

Ran out of light before I could delve any deeper, but anyone know where the earth return wires go near the ECU/battery? Any other thoughts?

Thanks,

Adrian

Hi Guys,

Due to low income levels of our country; I've reached my first KTM at my 32 this year; riding a 640 Adventure R - 2000.

It has a rebuilded engine on 15.500Kms. Previous owners were really "sick" guys who cared the bike like puppy :)

The taller windshield is found on the older Adventures, I think they changed the nose to a one piece in 2003? Not sure if you can use the older nose on the younger tank. One of our fellow inmate had a 1 piece nose made up with the older style screen/lip. I have no ides why they changed it, seems most of us prefer the taller version. Its good for daily use and dirt days. Personally, I'd like to see one a little taller and a bunch wider for those 300+ mile days!

i tried to put the taller screen on mine when i had an adv,,, id dint look right just laid over the stock one piece upper, i think the oly way to make it right is to cut the one piece style screen to bolt on the earlier style properly.

sounds like it might be easier to just buy a rallye full piece.

there were two parts of the early screen that didnt work with the later style for just being laid over it and bolted on,,, the mounting "lip" at the bottom flared out in a way that just didnt jive and the "bubble" thats in the screen made it sit away from the later style one piece. i think if you cut the lip off the early screen it would be a much smoother look, but you still have the bubble. i have seen a screen that looks like a stock replacement for the early one but smooth with out the bubble,,, thats prolly the one to get.

V2,
have you looked at the LaminarLip? It says it fits all years, but looks like it will only fit the later style, its held on my highspeed velcro, so it would work as a tour screen. I might have to get one for myself!
