new ktm 640

i just bought a 2003 ktm 625 with a 675 big bore kit that has been converted to a 640 adventure body style. Bike has been extensively outfitted and works damn well. I bought a triumph explorer xc for long distance touring and outfitted as much as possible for backcountry travel. It actually works pretty well for such a big bike. Seem to fall down in the same places as my buddies on their gsa's.
I live in southern Nevada and we seem to have 2 kinds of roads, sand with rocks and clay with rocks. Got tired of banging up my explorer and bought the KTM for this stuff. Works great and really love it for what its made for, do not want to ride it to Alaska.

I have three 640 A tanks, two from 03 and one from 07... In the 03 specs the rated capacity was 28 liters in 07 it was 25.5 liters... The real volume of these three tanks is 25.5 from dead empty {tank off bike to make sure}...

That's a little strange, 25.5 liters is 6.74 gallons, but mgorman added 7.2 gallons at the gas station. He didn't say what year, but with a flickering fuel light it would have to be 2002+. I measured mine off the bike dry as well, but perhaps the older models were slightly different. Not sure, but that's a sizeable difference.

I have many +26 liter fills, and few +27 liter fills on my notes, and no push arrivals to gas station...

New 2002 KTM 640 Adventure

This Craigslist shit has gotta STOP! There must be some kinda moto therapy to stop buying....but so much cool stuff is coming out of the woodwork this spring...like this '02 Adventure popped up right here in my home town. We settled at $3200. 17,000 miles. 2 owners. Guts seat.

I bought from a 'red haired man-eater', she had it the last 6 years, never took it off road! (Too tall-imagine that).



Love the retro Euro rally bike styling, looks like my buddies 1959 Cessna 310 here...640's rare machine around here.



So I sold the super reliable,maintenance free '06 KLR (background) the next day for $2700, breaking even after riding that for 3 years.



I think I have now owned every 650 sized D.S bike around, XR600R, DR650, KLR 650 and now the 640. It's been fun comparing them all.
The 640 sure rips in the dirt! Beats 'em all off road by far. No avoiding it, she's a bit of a jackhammer on the pavement. But man she rips off-road! Prepare to be flogged-Hard!

To all my 950-990 riding buddies, lets GO OFFROAD-"I'll wait for you at the next intersection".

Lots of orange in the barn now, anyone up for beers, oil changes and valve checks?

Mine is a 2003, I am sure that every tank made cools and forms a little different. It wouldn't take much for one to warp inwards and loose or outwards and gain. Both petcocks were open so it should have drained properly. When on the freeway. my 950 doesn't transfer gas as well and the left tank drains faster than the right on prolonged freeway sessions.

With my 950, which has the 12 gallon Safari tanks, I have found the great plains region of the USA have different ingredients in their fuels or what I believe could be the amount of ethanol.

All 4 times that I have crossed the great plains, my fuel tanks have swelled in size to the point the gas caps take great force to twist off. Once I am up in the Canadian Providences, Rocky Mountains or back across the Mississippi River, my tanks shrink back down shortly after a refuel. I have never ridden my 640 west of the Mississippi so I have no clue if it affects the KTM plastic.

Looks like you scored a nice deal!

I really enjoyed having my 950 on the west coast the past 3 weeks playing in the desert. The 640 definitely has it's advantages off-road but after taking my trip, not so much out west as back east. The weight combined with the school bus turning radius of the 950 really sucks in the Eastern forests. Some day I'd like to ride my 640 in those conditions since I found it to be a total blast in the sand whoops of Michigan. That and digging out a 640 is much easier than that 950!

640 Adventure Oil Change video

Did the back yard oil change on the new to me 640 Adventure (quite the ritual on this machine...) and shot this how to video.



Thanks to this thread I found the free online owners manual here with all the specifics on said ritual.
