This is an interesting thread to read. I don't know if I could lane split or not. I can see too many things to go wrong with lane splitting which would make it difficult for me to lane split. I do have one question, there have been several "LEO" said, what does that stand for?

Sorry if should be obvious but I am new to this.

I like to hunt lions. They are a real challenge.

I believe it should be legal with a some restrictions. Restrictions like, no splitting if traffic is moving over 25mph, with the motorcycle no more than 10mph over traffic speed. There are a few others, but I don't wish a write all night. It really comes down to common sense.

The hardest part will be educating the general public. Remember how long and hard it took to make right on red a common action.

Like every thing else we deal with, it's the education of the common driver that we have to worry about.

Perhaps this thread inspired me, but this morning I pulled up to a traffic jam in my suburban atlanta neighborhood and just thought to myself, "It's SPLITTIN' time."

I filtered right down past about 3/4 mile of traffic. surprisingly, I only got one angry honk (from a service truck i think. not a surprise. why are service truck drivers such dicks?). I was expecting way more pissed off drivers.

See?!

Not nearly as hard as ya think.

(just be careful, there's always ONE idiot out there that wants to 'teach someone a lesson.')

Or one police officer to teach you lesson.
Bragging online about lane splitting where its not legal seems foolish to me.

Isn’t that a little paranoid? I worry about a police state too but I don’t think it is that bad. We are not talking about an intrinsically criminal act and one way to make lane splitting legal is to ignore the law. If enough people do it ….

Oh, for jebus sake! It's not like he's talking about a felony or some federal offense. If we have to worry about this then we are already in George Orwell's 1984.

We still have a few years left (hopefully) before we quite get there.

Paranoid? Not anymore than Gummee!'s note that there are drivers who want to 'teach someone a lesson' by cutting them off, not yielding right of way or plain aiming for you. It happens a lot and motorcyclists would be foolish to not believe it. Geez, the 2nd most mentioned piece of riding advice here on ADvrider, after ATGATT, is acting as if others on the road are out to get you. You seem the paranoid one for automatically jumping to a "police state" conclusion.

Around here they've made a push for people to report bad driving in the same way they encourage people to report possible drunk drivers. Perceived unfairness ("he cut in line in front of me, now I'm going to teach him a lesson") seems the surest way to raise people's ire on the road. It doesn't matter what you think about the "intrinsictlly criminal" nature of the act or whether its (in VRF_firelfy's words) a "felony or some federal offense". When someone calls the police because they're mad you're doing something they can't those claims won't sway the cop writing you the ticket.

Or maybe just a pissed-off anti-splitting vigilante ADV-er who rode across the USA (wearing the obligatory diaper like a crazy NASA astronaut X-girlfriend).

FYYFF, I'm coming to get you for splitting where it isn't legal!!!!!
