Personally as a responsible rider I feel lane splitting should be legal on freeways and at stops.

But........

In places where it isn't an established tradition, I have little faith in some riders and drivers being able to handle the judgments and responsibilities that go with a change like that.

I agree. Last year both Washington and Oregon began legislative inquiries to begin feasibility studies...

IMO it would need to be phased in. Filtering for the first few years then lane splitting.
I don't have my fingers crossed. I will continue to risk it at times.

Yes to both, but I can't imagine it happening when guys that supposedly own, and ride motorcycles talk about blocking other motorcyclists filtering.

It's just one more reason motorcycling as a whole sucks in the States. Admittedly many bikers/motorcyclists have brought some of the angst on themselves. I mean damn, we as a collective can't get along, how the Hell are we ever going to promote motorcycling to the masses?

A great start would be making motorcycles tax/toll exempt (makes a lot of sense charging the same toll for a motorcycle as it does a 40' diesel motorhome). Allow lane splitting, filtering, and the like. Make it so advantageous to ride a motorcycle/scooter that even asshats that normally hate motorcycles start taking a look at them...

Even with all of that I'm not sure things would change enough to really matter, but it would be worth a shot. At least some of us would benefit from it....

Do it every day and filter at pretty much every light I come across. I've noticed the Multi gets more people to make room and because of bar/mirror placement fits places my monster never did.

The fact that even on an Adventure riding web-site that over 10% are against it is a bit baffling.

i filter almost every day, and every single day people look at me a little weird but they make room.

well other then a few weeks ago a woman got completely pissed off and then when she finally caught up to me at the next light decided to stop about 6 inches from my back tire. needless to say i sat through 4 light intervals while she freaked the hell out. i figure if she wants to be that close to me, why not make that time last?

Didn't I opine months ago that "Should lane splitting be legal?" was akin to asking "Should you enjoy a 3-way with Charlize Theron and Scarlett Johannsen?"

That's a real no-brainer....

This is an adventure riding site???

Based on the stuff some people post I'd have thought it was a Mini Van owners or Airbag safety forum

I felt quite mislead when I took a wrong turn at a fork in google's road and came here

It's quite the opposite of what i was looking for

It's one of the few things CA does that other States should do.

And it is NOT called lane splitting. It IS called lane sharing.
One can be cited for unsafe lane changes while lane sharing.
I rode for 8 years commuting between Long Beach and L. A. everyday in all weathers lane sharing in the '80s.
Never a real issue.

I have seen motorcycles cited leaving the Laguna Seca Races for using the shoulder to get to the front.
This road was/is a two lane with a double yellow.

Sweden (iirc) use to drive on the left side like the UK & Japan.
This was changed to right side all at once... accidents went down because everyone must have been freaked out.

Hey, if it floats your boat, go ahead. Remember the door prize. Survival of the fit. I think fit people don't lane split. It'll get ya someday. Riding a bike is dangerous enough, why add to it?
It should be legal. However you shouldn't be eligible for state or federal medical care if you choose to tempt fate in such a fashion. You crash, you pay.

Do you even ride a motorcycle?

The reason lane splitting should be legal in all 50 states and the reason it is legal in CA and the rest of the World outside of the so-called Free USof A is because IT IS MORE SAFE FOR THE RIDER NOT LESS!!!!

Get back in your bubble.
