Well, I always thought that splitting is like lane sharing while overtaking moving vehicle, filtering happens only in traffic or at red light intersection when you filter through stationary vehicles up front...

Using that definition: filtering.

Filtering

We over here can over take/filter even on double white lines providing we do not cross the double line. I think your double white lines are yellow having looked at a few ride reports. What do you do on roads that have no lane markings? Most car and truck drivers in the UK will move over to allow a bike to pass if possible. Why do other road users not like being over taken in your country it is not as if you are going to then hold them up is it. Considering how closely we are related to each other America does seem to have very different attitudes to using the roads. I have not yet been to America but will be putting this right in the next couple of years as I retire after 30 years as a fireman in 29 months.

Dood. All them Puritans y'all kicked out back in the 1700s? Guess where they ended up. Guess which country has been effed in the head ever since.

People will go out of their way to make sure you don't pass em over here. Its effing crazy, but there ya go. Legal or not, if you're gonna overtake someone, do it assertively. Don't dilly-dally along and expect em to move 'cause they won't.

I agree, being on a moto you'll never be 'in their way' but crazy is just that: crazy. (unless its a herd of Hardleys, then they ARE in the way)

...and sadly we can't give them back. They have outfucked the rest of the white people.

This. Because THEY can't do it, they should stop US from doing it FOR OUR OWN GOOD.

I've been bitten countless times for letting someone in, only to have them slow down, dilly-dalliers are first behind me.

I'd like it to be legal in Florida but I wouldn't want to be the first one trying it down here!

Today, there was a nasty 1.5km backup of traffic moving not even 5kph. What could have taken me a solid half hour to get through took less than five minutes.

Seeing that it was 1.5km, I guess this was Dusseldorf and not Detroit? Would you have lanesplit in the same backup in Detroit?

Filtered half a mile on a poorly thought out three-lane exit ramp from the interstate to downtown Mpls. there is a traffic light at the bottom, two major roads, one of which is a tunnel bypass for hazardous vehicles off the interstate.

Took me a minute. Cars were dead stopped. I moseyed back into a lane four cars short of the intersection so any LEOs wouldn't know how I got there. Moto traffic bliss.

I only filter in very backed up, stopped, lengthy situations like this. I'd love to do it all the time but the risk/reward just isn't there. If only it were legal, and accepted. :sigh

The same backup in Detroit would be like getting off of the Southfield going northbound, so YES.

It was really filtering - cars were barely moving. I admit that real, high-speed splitting scares the pants off me. Filtering, however, does not. I do support both, though.

Filtering is one of those reasons to commute on a bike. It just makes everyone's life easier.

I split whenever I am in Nevada, Arizona, or Utah. It seems like I am the only one. Nobody is looking behind them, and I am well past before they notice. They must approve, because they honk and yell to let others in front know I am coming. Thanks guys!

By the way guys, I started the Wikipedia entry on lane sharing. Feel free to contribute! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lane_splitting
