Found this while trawling the net last night.... its the history of the V-Strom and how it came to being. It makes interesting reading re the DR, its forerunner.

Everything comes full circle; now BMW have realised not everyone wants the weight of a 12GS and sell the 800. Yamaha are rumoured to be sitting on the next generation Super Tenere, likey to be 900cc (and the 660 is doing very well).

Quite informative although written from a Vstrom fan viewpoint - I'm not a fan. And what do they mean with "mediocre workmanship let the sales down"?

The Honda info is slightly wrong. The TA was first and then came the AT.

XL600V 1987 - 1999
XL650V 2000 - 2007
XL700V 2008 - current

XRV650 1989 - 1989
XRV750 1990 - 2002

There was a prelude to these, the works NXR750 that was raced in the Dakar. Probably against the DR BIGs.

Yeah I thought that too. I beg to differ !! Judging by our forum and the amount of DR clubs listed on the net and the fact that our DR's just keep going, I dont agree about the 'mediocre workmanship' one bit. I bet V-Strom owners cannot say the same !

I can't upload pics from work, but if I remember tonight I'll show you my toolbox. I got it with the TA but kept it when I sold the TA. Made from a metal army flare box (can buy them for around 4 Euro each - shout if I can help) inside an alum frame that bolted onto my soft pannier racks. It's currently with my friend, but in there is more than enough tools to fix punctures - even the tyre levers fit to the bottom. Quite a clever idea from the previous owner of the TA. Will be able to take closeup pics...soon I get it back

We already checked but it will fit the DR without mods.

Cool! Now they must finish my tanks - I'm gonna loose it...

At time DR was built Yamaha's electircs were nightmare and Yamahas ate oil like petrol, Kawasaki used chewingum for frames and had own idea of suspension that was far from erhm...suspension :) and Honda had tendency to be head above in quality overall but at cost of overcomplicated elements of design + they built some engines that are one or another of it's internals in 5000 km. Suzuki was infamous for bolts etc. used and rust as well as horrid quality ignition locks.
As we only had access to really outdated bikes imported by cargo ships crew members I had full hands-on experience with those problems

The statement about what let sales down (not the case really) isn't really correct.
