Thank you all for your kind response to the LOOK of my bike! I just had to mount that can, part because it was dirt-cheap, part because its huge, part because it sounds formidable! I know, that rearwheel travel is a big issue. But since I mainly use bike for comute, half of that on good and flat dirtroads, its not a problem. However, I am changing that a bit. Right now the bike is getting stainless exhaust pipes all the way from the front by a skilled welder I know, and he is fiddling with the mount of the can under the seat, so that I should get an extra couple of cm there.
Another thing is the rear shock and spring. I have not been able to find anything usefull. The original is a bit too soft, and because of the exhaust, I need something that can be adjusted to get more wheeltravel. Any sugestions?

I have put an EMC shock on my bike which performs well and is slighly longer than stock (about 5mm). I think also that wilbers can supply shocks with adjustable ride height. But the cheap soltion if you want to retain your standard shock would be to go for a stiffer spring and get new dogbones which will raise the bike height.
What is your connection tube from header pipe to exhaust made from? It looks like something flexible...

Thanks for the tips! That flexible middle part on the exhaust is standard flextube for car-exhaust. Not so sturdy, and thats why I am having both that and the header pipe custom made in stainless steel.

In one of the very early posts in this theard (or in the 'suzuki dakar bikes' thread) someone said that a full exhaust system made from 2 inch tubing resulted in close to 60hp on the back wheel with standard carbs jetted properly. I'm going that route myself pretty soon.

The transformation has begun.

I am in the proces of striping my Dr 800 1997 from unnececery over waight and some more crach friendly plastic for next seasons trip and the Africa trip 2011.

some pics of how it will look like when it is finiched but I dont know what to do with the rear at the moment.

this is how it will look like plus some more ad ons like acerbis hand proteectors and a new digital clocks

some left over to be sold doet any one have any clue what it is worth and where to advertise
I am in Sweden so not so many Dr 800 around
