Wytheville / Tazewell Area Riding

Hey Gang,

Going to set up base camp in Wytheville VA Saturday late morning. Needs some sights to see and roads to ride. PM's welcome of course, we're always looking for route, "less traveled."

Recovering from a little, "Procedure" done this winter and limited to riding asphalt. Me and Rebster will be on the SV,s with sticky tires.

Don't know if this is useful - I was up in the area a few days ago. I'm not an expert in the area, just relied on some suggestions I read here and this:

http://www.visitvirginiamountains.co...he-dragon.html

This is the route I took:

I didn't have a lot of time, so I did this in one day. I started at 81, headed north on 16, went east to Burke's Garden (red route). Took the road down to 42 to 622 to 16 to 58 and then to 600 (green route). Went up Whitetop Mountain - I did a gravel route off to the left that isn't marked on this map - it takes you up the mountain with some cool views. Back down to Whitetop Road/600, to 762, to 107, to 91, to 601 to 16 and to Marion, my home base (blue route).

Note - the Burke's Garden part with the switchbacks is all gravel, so it sounds like you would want to avoid it. The route going through that town is paved but it eventually turns into gravel. It looks like there's a loop around the town that you could take to avoid the rough parts. That whole area is quite beautiful. I have some pics here.

Hope this is somewhat useful. I know I missed a ton of other great routes due to limited time, but there will always be a next time. The map I linked to on the Smyth County tourism website above is pretty helpful.

Just read you Linked post. That was an awsome job of capturing the sights !

This weekend is a scouting run. The doc wont let me ride the KLR (or anything off-road) for a while. Hoping to get back up there after the summer season is over and make all that aftermarket money I spent worth while.

I'm glad you like the photos! All of the roads out there are so nice that you wouldn't be remiss if you just stuck to the paved stuff. But I think the KLR definitely deserves its turn out there as well, once you're ready

Do you mean the Tiger? On that bike is a TKC-80. The F800GS (white bike) has on Heidenau K60s.
