She still sounds sick after getting her all sorted out. She died at the top of the hill a couple of times, but not in this clip. turned out the fuel screw a bit, thinking it might have been a bit lean, but still happened. Tomorrow Ill play with it some more and sort it out. she ran fine with current jetting prior to the "incident" so probably just got the screw turned out too many times.

Well it may not be the most glamerous area to ride but any ride is generally better than no ride :-), keep it up.

Agreed. My schedule is hectic but a little time is better than no time. Now of I could get my 400 running I could have someone to ride with

Starter Problem

Hi Folks, I am new owner of a 2001 DR-Z250 and I have an issue with the electric starter I need some advice on. The bike has very low use (89 miles) and is very clean. It kicks starts perfectly and runs very strong and true. I Love the bike. But my issue is the electric starter is not working. I knew it was bad when I bought it and got a better deal as a result and I am trying to diagnose the problem.
Current condition and problem:
When I hit the start button (with clutch pulled in) there is a clicking noise from solenoid (not starter). Current is making its way to the starter and all ground wires have been cleaned. However, after I washed it (first time) it stated once. Since then nothing just clicking noise when I press starter button. Also all lights are working, and don’t flicker when engine is running and revved.

What I have done so far:
Ordered a service manual (be here Friday)
Good battery (PO said about a month old and holds full charge)
Cleaned all battery and ground connections (because of low use they all looked good but cleaned them anyways)
I have cleaned and checked Starter button, kill switch and all wires leading to and from both, and fuse.
Banged the starter with rubber hammer to try to loosen it up.

So my question is, before I remove the starter is they any other thing I might check??

Thanks

Welcome to the club first off!
As for the starter I honestly have no clue. Sounds like you have checked the usual suspects. The fact that it worked once after washing seems like it could be something like a loose wire or ground.
Hopefully one of the smarter inmates can shed some light on this situation.

check the wires for loose connections and corrosion
confirm the battery has a full charge, take it to an auto parts of motorcycle shop for a load test
if all that is good remove the starter motour and test it

I pulled the starter out last night and sure enough that was the problem. Cracked open the starter, cleaned it up and put it back in. Started right up. On a side note, the removal of the starter was not too difficult once the pipe was removed. Thanks for the help.

Great stuff you're obviously a good DIYer ! this is a requirement of owning a motorcycle.

Well I thought I had solved the starter problem but the starter stopped working again so I decided to bite the bullet and get a new one. So old starter out and new starter in. No problem with the swap and starter works great but now my bike will not start.
Yes I fixed one problem and created a new one at the same time. So here are the facts:
Current status:
Bike turns over and getting a strong spark. Getting fuel and have even used starter fluid to no avail. Kill switch operating correctly. So it turns over, gets spark and has fuel, tries to catch but just won’t start.
Also, it was running perfectly prior to the starter swap out. My thinking is that I may have damaged the CDI or possibly weakened the coil when I had the battery charger charging the battery when it was in the motorcycle. Could the charger have fried the CDI or coil?
I am stumped; any help would be greatly appreciated.

Plug was a little dark when i pulled and cleaned it. Could it be the chain tensioner that i removed to swap out starter? I removed the two screws and put it back in the same way, is there a special way to install it?

I am going to get new plug tomorrow. Just charged batter for a couple of hours and tried again to start it. It was very close, small pops and pipe got warm. So i am going to give battery a good night on charger, then new pug and try it again tomorrow.

I am thinking if that does not work i will then pull the carb and give it a clean.

Thanks
