The other Long Cane event is a Hare Scramble (a similar race that consist of a woods trail loop measuring 8-12 miles and repeated 4 to 6 times totaling 35 or 45 miles) This event is a head to head competion with riders in the same class starting at the same time and racing against each other.

Traditionally an enduro runs 50 or more miles with no trails repeated. In an enduro, you race against the clock, the man with the quickest time wins. This event is broken into sections of 10-15 miles each with a short rest period between each section. At the end of the event: section times are totaled and the winner is the man with the lowest total score.

The last time I rode that Enduro was in the late 80's.

I would love to take you up on knocking the pine straw off and working a check. I have done so at the Sandlaper Enduro for the past couple of year. That's the only time I get to ride tight woods all year.

I have been thinking about joining SETRA and ride a Enduro are two just to have some good wood trails to ride, but I can't keep that kind of pace up anymore for long.

September 7 might be a problem for me, won't know until Sept.

Some folks are very interested in the competition aspects, but many others are simply interested in having fun at their own pace. I had a guy tell me one morning at the start line that he looked at it as "a spirited ride in the woods."

In days gone by, it was important to understand timekeeping: but today most enduros are very straight forward and do not require computers and such. A digital watch is probably all you need. Riders usually start 4 or 5 to a row; most new riders just get on a row with experienced riders and follow their lead.

This event is part of the SE&TRA calendar. (www.setra.org)

The Long Cane Enduro start area is near Willington SC. If you don't wish to compete, you can ride the forest service roads that connect some sections of the race and spectate at the same time. There is no admission charge.

I appreciate it Tim. Dad and I ran by there on our way home, this afternoon, about 4:45.

Only street legal dual sport we saw was an '08 KLR. Some guy, never even introduced himself, finally walked over, asked if he could help. I asked if he had any DRZ's or a DR650. All he said was "No, I'm lucky to have this...."(looking at the KLR)

No, "i've got '09's coming in soon....let me see if I can locate you one...." nothing. Just a kinda nonchalant...No....lucky....

Well, My Jeep Liberty was sitting out front, trailer hooked up, and I had cash in the pocket, but he really didn't seem too interested in selling, taking an order deposit.....nuttin'. Maybe it was too late in the day.....who knows. I won't be back. If a salesman doesn't wanna try to sell me, I sure don't wanna force my cash on them.

Thanks Tim, maybe I'm just too hard to please.

Aiken has a DRZ400 Kliff. At least they did on Tuesday. $5500 or so IIRC.
Just don't buy those Alpinestars I'm going back for next week
