first thing jenn said when i hauled it home, was that it looked like a good one to use for my cafe bike. i said yep, it sure would be, if it wasnt an original 3000 mile one previous owner 1965 bultaco metralla. its to rare to chop up.

Sunday - Ames - Hickory Park - and fishing

Don't forget about making it to Hickory Park in Ames this Sunday (22nd) for a Central Iowa get-together of ADVers. It seems like some people are showing up around 5ish.

If anyone is interested in tagging along, I'm planning on riding from Des Moines up to around Lehigh on Sunday by following the river as closely as possible. I'll be stopping along the way to do a little fly fishing if I can find a spot or two. From there, I'll make my way over to Hickory Park. I'll probably leave West Des Moines around noon -- maybe just after lunch.

If you see this in your neighborhood, make sure to give a proper ADV salute:

The wife asked me today..."Got the route planned out for Sunday?"

Nope but I did promise her no interstate...it makes her nervous. But she is also uber nervous about gravel and dirt.

She said if I decide I want to do dirt, she will drive up to Hickory Park. But I think I can keep it mostly on pavement for her.

Think my route will be something close to or exactly like this: Home to Doliver to Hickory Park to Home

any idea about when you'll be in Lehigh? I will have to leave Mtown around the same time and will be coming in from Highway 20. If our schedules don't match up, NBD, I've got several routes put in my GPS.

Gravel is shown by parallel black lines with white in the middle on the DOT high-res county maps available on their website. "B" roads look the same but have hash marks connecting the black lines to make little boxes. Solid black lines are paved.

That's a markup of a potential route or two around Lehigh that I just did really quickly on my iPad.

I would guess around 2:30-3pm, but that's a W.A.G. My trips on gravel are always way faster than the Google estimate. Haven't figured out why yet. But I hope to find a fishing spot somewhere, so who knows.

That little stretch of gravel will be fine and if she isn't OK with it, no big deal for a small detour.

I was looking at the color maps. gravel is red, 'b' roads are green, everything else (yellow, purple, black) is paved.

Yeah from the looks of that, the gravel section is only about 2 or 3 miles. She will be OK with that.

hickory park

hi everyone
i too, would like to meet up for a ride on sunday and eat at hickory.
i also live in stanhope.

i recommend this stretch of gravel road along the river, it is very scenic ( for the middle of iowa )
http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Ka...a=1,2&t=m&z=12

much of the road bordered by trees and hills, with some views of the river

hi ZLTFUL

just a fyi on your route. i think the road through ledges park south of boone, is still closed because they are rebuilding a bridge and roads, from past flooding.
