Rode mileage today and the DS loop is 38 miles with approx 18 miles off road. If you get started early enough, you can ride two loops. The enduro is two 32 mile loops with approx 24 miles off road. |

How aggressive of a trail is it?

You could ride your Vstrom on it.
Well, maybe not quite. Trail sections will be easy for those on plated dirt bikes or DRZ type of machines. A decent rider shouldn't have much issue on 650 single DS bikes. We are recommending NOT to bring a big twin DS bike. The hardest trail sections of the enduro are NOT part of the DS ride. If you want tough trail, you'll have to enter the Enduro. |

Yes it's a busy weekend and all the other events are within a 50 mile radius. The promoter's seem to think that nobody crosses over and the events don't effect each other, but they do. I'm committed to work our DS/enduro, but I would have liked the option to ride the trials or Byron GP too. You could ride the DS on Saturday and do the Pearl City trials on Sunday if you wanted too. I'm not sure what day the GP is on. |

Holstein...Wow, now there are some memories...lived there for 2 years. Not a lot up there, but still, very nice little rural town Iowa... VT Industries in Holstien was the big employer when I was there.

New dual sport
Fellow Iowan's,
I'm planning a trip with a few friends up to Dubuque for lunch and then on to Yellow River State park for an overnight camping trip. Any great off the beaten path trails/roads you might recommend in this area? We all ride dual sport bikes (BMW GS's and KLR's) and would like to hit some trails or beautiful gravel rides if you know of anything. Thanks

If you'll cross the river at Sabula, and duck into Savanna, IL and look for Clay Street (should be your second left as you enter town off the bridge) and snake it through town...it turns into Terrapin Ridge Road, Scenic Ridge Road, and Derinda Road...among others, and ends at US 20 east of Elizabeth, IL. Then take 20 west and go through Elizabeth (watching your speed) and find Elizabeth/Scales Mound Road to your right. Follow that to the 4-way stop and turn left on Stagecoach Trail and run that into Galena...ultimately ending back at US 20. At that point you're only 15ish miles to Dubuque.
It's an awesome ride and was a favorite of mine when I lived up that way. It depends on when you're doing this but I'm due to make that run again and would ride it with you.

Many Thanks. We will check it out and hopefully have some nice photo's to share.
We are shooting up there Saturday the 22nd. Unfortunately we are coming from Fairfield in Southeast Iowa and it might be tough to predict our ETA because we tend to like to take back roads and side roads to get to our destination. I would say early afternoon (1 or 2pm) but again it's hard to say.

Route to yellow river forest
I do that loop often from Davenport. I like to stop at Balltown scenic overlook before going into the park via hwy 76 to Hwy 364 (Great River Rd) to Donahue Rd. Pikes Peak park is a great 3 state scenic overlook with modern public toilets and showers close to YRF.I feel like I'm adventure riding as I enter and leave the park. Donahue Rd dead ends in Little Paint campground next to a good trout stream. $8 to camp via self registration.
