I just wanted to say hey. I'm sure I'll run into people I know on here. I'm a nerd, so I'm active on other message boards and am out and about enough that I have probably met a few of you at one time or another.

Nice first post there silverhead.

Anyone interested in a "spirited" ride around Galena this week? A day trip on a weekday would be great, or could make it an overnight/camping. Biased towards gravel but with some inevitable pavement mixed in.

Question on plating a dirt bike.. I was told the bike had to be street legal from the dealer in Iowa.. No add on lights etc. But then Iv read about some who have plated a bike in another state.
Don't you need to be a resident of a state to plate it there?

The bike has to be 50 state legal in order to be plated legally in IA. It doesn't have to be purchased from an IA dealer. A bike that is not 50 state legal, but was legally plated in another state, will not transfer to IA legally.

I purchased a 2001 Kaw. KLX 300R and was simply able to present my title to DMV and receved plates. I believe the problem starts if your title has a stamp or bears wording to the effect that the vehicle is intended for off road use and not for highway use.

I just ordered a Tusk lighting kit for the KLX just to be in compliance but was able to easily get a plate and registration on essentially, a bike not intended for road use (and I live in Iowa)

back prior to 2007 or so when KTM came out with the EXCs street legal, KTM was about the only MFG with a dirt bike title that didn't say "off road only" and the owners were able to handlilly get them plated in Iowa. But there were a few instances of the non-KTM dealers tattle tailing/bringing this to the DOT's attention that technically they shouldn't be street legal and some folks got letters instructing them to send back the plates.

I was one of those. Had the DOT inspect both of my KTMs. The 640 E passed, my 520 EXC did not pass.

Get yourself a bike that is plated from the factory, save yourself money and headaches.

I went round and round with DMV a few years ago and was told they were able to tell if the bike was a enduro from the VIN #. In your case, I'm surprised they allowed your 300R since it didn't have street gear.

EXC's did not become street legal in all 50 states until 2007. The state will check the VIN and also may physically want to check the bike for the emissions sticker.

But this also seems to depend upon whether your county is asleep or not. I can pretty much assure you, if you live in a major county, Polk, Linn, Johnson, etc... you will not be able to get dirt bikes plated. This also includes the KLX 300. That said I know of few individuals who have their non legal KTM's and others plated in some rural IA counties, where they don't seem to be on the ball. But the bottom line is, if the VIN or emissions sticker isn't right, it's not legal. Sooner or later they may catch up to you.

By the way, I have a 2008 KTM 450 EXC for sale that is legally plated.

Yep 2whlcr is correct.

My 1st 2001 KTM EXC 520 was street legal with the Baja designs DS kit installed. They inspected it and yanked my title and plates.

My 2nd 520 EXC was a 2002 and I was able to transfer the bikes title in my name no problem.

I won't tell you how though. :)

All this one had was a mirror, high low headlight and brake/tail light where the brake light only worked with the rear pedal.

Awesome bike with the 6 gears!!

Well, possibly I got lucky but the Polk county DMV issued plates to my KLX 300R and I was about as happy as I could be walking out with those plates.

I know 7 people that have had knocks on their door and their plates seized after the fact since 2007. I moved here from IL in 2010 and was refused a plate for my KTM...that had one from IL on it. And a neighbor here got a knock on his door last fall and they seized the plate off his XR650R.

It has nothing to do with what you have on your bike, and everything to do with your VIN number. Iowa doesn't allow for the conversion of off-road bikes. Just because you were issued a plate doesn't mean that it won't set off a flag someday. Enjoy it while you have it. You may have it for ever...or you may not.
