So, what's the details on this Dragoon trail? Where would we start? Where does it go? Where would we camp?

Trail follows the path of the 1st U.S. Dragoons, cavalry soldiers who scouted Iowa in 1835 after the Black Hawk Purchase put the area under U.S. government patrol. The trail follows the course of the Des Moines River from Fort Dodge to Knoxville and Lake Red Rock.

It is a good ride. I was on the north end of it last week. Let me know the details. I will be at SLAP May 15-19.

Dragon Trail GPS?

This looks like a lot of fun but google maps don't seem to be very helpful. Obviously, one could do this by simply arriving at one of the starting spots and staying along the river as best you can till you find the end, but in the interest of additional research, does anybody actually have this trail mapped or have a gps file for it?

Thanks,

I just followed the signs. and when I didn't see any, or they pointed away from the river, I stayed close to the river.

this is a crappy, non-exportable map, but this is more or less the route I took last year. my phone GPS got all confused a couple times, so I just stuck to the west side of the river. The DOT has an official list of roads, but no map that I was ever able to find.

it should be noted that the Dragoon Trail is only the part between Ft. Dodge and Boone on that map, and that the highlighted part is only about 1/3 of the full trail.

I'm up for the Dragoon thing. The 18th of May is the Baxter cycle open house, and I know a couple of the guys on here are going to that (myself included)

I tried to map it out using the directions on the IA tourism site. But, they use road names that don't show up on google maps.

G-28?
P-73?

We reading maps or playing BINGO?

Gravity, I think the Iowans are just trying to confuse us WI transplants by giving roads multiple names.

Try Bing maps. Those "bingo" road names show up.

Side note

Hey all "Iowa Roll Call", I'm going to go from Atlantic to West Bend IA this Saturday (27th) to visit the "Grotto of the Redemption". If anyone else would like to go, I'd be glad to have company. I'm not Catholic, but It's a HUGE Iowa landmark, so I'd like to visit it. PM me, or post on here, I'll meet up along the way or whatever, if anyone would like to come. I'm riding a KLR650.
Either way, be safe, and I'll see ya out on the road.
P.S. I have NO IDEA what the heck that is, but I wanted to put it in here. It's some kind of green horse or something? Who knows. I guess it's one of life's mysteries. We'll never know. (the banana is enjoying it though)

That crazy looking thing is apparently some kind of llama found on Pokemon. My daughter would know.

200 HP Llama? I'd ride one of those!!

Thanks for the tip, Mow-Ree. Bing maps was just the ticket. I've deciphered the direction and have the whole Dragoon Trail - broken up into 5 sections. I could only add 10 deviations to each set of directions, so it's the only way I could do it.

In google maps, I could export these routs to a .gpx file and upload them to my Garmin. I haven't messed with Bing much, so I don't know if I have that option yet. But, here's the route for those interested.

Fort Dodge to Stratford

Don't remind me. I was oh so close to being able to make that ride. I'm hoping to recreate it with a couple of buddies later in the year, though.

Anyone interested in a .gpx file for the Dragoon route? I'm going to make one for myself, but if there's interest, I can post it up on the "tracks" section.
