I like that one too.

I get it a lot. I've got a fairly short commute - and 1/2 of it is on 25 MPH city streets. So, if the roads are clear and it's more than about 20 out in the morning, I'll take the bike to work.

This morning it was 30 for the commute in, but it was worth it since it was closer to 70 when I got off of work and I took the loooooong way home.

So yeah, I get that question a ton while walking to my desk.

When I hear "Did you ride your bike?"

I say " Well I sure didn't push it here"

An absolutely fabulous day for a ride.
Found lots of new places to explore.

This is a very rare remote bridge with no access at all.
I was just in the right place and meet the right guy at the right time to gain access to the bridge.

Nice work Steve

Looks like a fun ride. Guessing you didnt turn around on that one bridge ;)

I am thinking to head over to the Eddyville OHV park to crash my bike for a few hours in the next few weeks. I have heard to avoid this place if its been raining but anybody else have any tips before I spend an afternoon going there?

Thanks.

You mean Bluff Creek? Yeah- it's no fun at all on a bike if its wet. First time I went, it'd be raining all week, and I had a 50/50 tire on the back of my KTM 620. Me and Mowree almost couldn't get out of the woods when we started down a path.

When it's not wet - it's is awesome.

What are you riding? What kind of riding are you looking for? There's MX tracks, hill climbs, single track through trees.

Thanks

I ride a 1200gs. I am basically going there because several of my friends with small CC dual sports want to check it out. I'm happy to go and take the time to bone up on my off road riding skills after a long winter. So mostly plan on exploring and then a little bit of technical riding practice.
Assuming its not too crowded and I wont be in anybody's way, ill probably ride a little bit of everything there. Mostly going to check it out and have some fun. Single track can suck on the GS if its really narrow through the trees, but that probably wont stop me from trying.

Here's a map i scribbled on after Mowree and I were there last:

There's a perimeter trail. Your 1200 will be in it's element there. Do that first to get a feel for the conditions. I'm not entirely sure the exact path of the trail as I always seem to get distracted and have never made it all the way around. I'm pretty confident that the white is correct, and the gray I'm less sure. Though there isn't anything on the gray part that a 1200GS couldn't go through.

The wooded trails on the SW corner of the map are alot of fun. You can get to them from the West side of the parking lot.

In the Northwest corner (don't get lost!!!), the terrain ranges from scary to downright terrifying. I wouldn't go near there with a bike your size. My 620 KTM was borderline. It's just full of very steep hills, and unless I missed it, there's no way to get out without some monster hill climbs. It's tricky because you'll be going down a path, minding your own business and suddenly find yourself in a situation with no easy way out. And, no room to turn around.

In the NorthWest, there's some great terrain. And the only area that's passable when it's wet. It's more gravel in that area and less clay. There are some tricky climbs, but it's very open. If you get into trouble here, it's your own fault as you should be able to see anything before you get into it.

awesome stuff

Thanks very much for the tips gravityisnotmyfriend. Very helpful. Without this I'm certain I would have been looking for that paddle I so often lose on Shit Creek. Oh well

Seriously though this is very helpful. Appreciate the comments and the heads up. I am planning to go the 26th with a few guys. We are riding to a camp site about an hour away the previous night then plan to hit the OHV park Saturday afternoon.

Please join us there. I'd be fun to meet you guys and see the bikes.

Watching me pick up the GS that many times is like its own sporting event.

No Problem! happy to help.

This video was mostly taken in the NE corner on a muddy day. I end up frustrated and swearing alot at the end. So keep the volume down at work or in front of impressionable children!

This was taken on a much nicer day:

Starts out in the NW area.
Then goes to the NE so I could redeem myself from the previous video.
Then, the Easy MX track to get a little air.
Then, the area labeled Hill Climbs on the map.
My feeble attempt at the giant up hill gravity cavity jump
The last bit is on the Perimeter trail.

I wish I could make it to meet up with you guys. You're the second guy to try to get me down there on the 26th! I've already got plans that weekend, sadly. But, I do plan on a few trips to Bluff Creek this summer.

Also, as a heads up, there is free camping at Bluff Creek. I've never actually camped there, but I'm hoping to this summer. I want to do sort of a live adventure test for a trip I'm planning at the end of 2015.

Very NICE!!!!! It was a road trip to Gina's day for me. They are thinking it might be a bad idle motor. I'll know more once they put it on the diagnostic.

Looks like a great ride! I've got to get out more. I've already found most of the gravel and B-roads within a 15 mile radius of Newton. Not much exciting around here!

Did have a great weekend in Waterloo with inmates Mowree and Varmit. My first real off roading experience with my new XRL was fantastic. The bike performs better than I could have hoped!

A long video with some sand and the obstacles at the single track area:

MX Track while trying out Varmit's KLR and Mowree's DR650. I got to ride a CRF230L as well - but didn't get video:
