Nothing wrong in doing that. Feel free to ask questions, I've always got great advice here.

Just picked up a 2 man tent, for this type of thing as well as ragbrai, have a tightly packable sleeping bag and thermarest already. Shouldn't need a stove yet as others I'm meeting will have kitchen gear.

All the Strom accessories I have I was able to roll into the 0% financing. Givi crash bars, rack, trekkers, center stand, and skid plate.

Welcome! When it comes to spending money in relation to bike trips, I think you'll find the best advice ever in this video -- starting at about 5:18:

Basically, spend the money on the trip, not on the preparations to do the trip. "Otherwise, you'll never get anywhere."

Haha, fair enough. I still need to find what works, what doesn't work, and what's missing that I just have to have. To do that, I just need to get out there and ride! Planning a simple overnight trip coming up soon to Anamosa to see the motorcycle museum.

This is everything I took for my first trip. Solo, two weeks, out through CO, NM, AZ, UT, WY, MT, SD, NE. There's a tent, sleeping bag, some clothes in there....

This is everything I took for a solo one-month trip through Mexico and Guatemala.

You don't need a ton.

It's not the trip there and back so much I'm worried about, it's the week+ of festivating between trips.

First, a little history. I have been an intermittent reader of ride reports for several years now, awing at the stories and experiences conveyed by the members here. Two years ago, I entered the motorcycling world and bought a 1973 CB350 with the intentions of building a slick little cafe racer over the winter. A year and a half later, that project got put on hold when I was forced to move, and ended up in an apartment without a garage. Last summer I finally took the MSF course and got my license. Well, I MUST have a steed if I have a license, right? So it was back to craigslist, where I picked up a nice 1981 Honda GL500 to do some learnin' on. Fast forward 6 months, and now I wanted to start doing longer trips, on something a little fancier and more appropriate for Adventuring. Enter my THIRD motorcycle, a 2013 V Strom ABS (that 0% financing is impossible to say no to! ) in Pearl White. I am currently living in downtown DSM, and as such, only have one motorcycle parking pass. For now, the Strom is sitting in a coworker's garage until I get the GL500 sold, but I can't wait until I can get it farkled up and starting putting the miles behind me!

Some good items in that thread, I've had good luck with the stuff I posted in it. Somewhere there is a Walmart adv thread, good resource for cheap stuff or emergencies equipment replacement on the road, I'll see if I can find it.
