My mom and family live further south on wyassup lake road so I know of other situations where the residents at the lake get overprotective.. My little brothers and a few friends canoed out to one of the little islands on the lake to camp for the night. There were 4-6 of them, around 19-20 years old, with a small campfire and I'm sure a few beers but they werent being crazy, just a chill campout.. Some resident spotted them and took his boat out to the island screaming at them and made them pack up and leave. My family lives like a mile or two down the road!

An East Hampton resident that has gone as far as to plant grass in front of the state forest gate to make it look like it is part of their yard. They put their garbage bins blocking where the road used to be on garbage pickup day.
That really irritates me.

I see a lot of this "Private Road" sort of stuff when doing my recon rides in the Catskills. Stuff blocking entrances to these public rights of way etc.. I find an easy tip off is a town sign for the road, and a "Private Road" or "Road Closed" sign from the local hardware store. Ignore them every time.

Another tip off if done according to what I understand is the law, is the direction posted signs face in relation to the road in question. If the signs are facing perpendicular to road(you have to turn your head 90* to either direction to read them while traveling down the road), it's a right of way with private property on either side. If the road is gated, and you can clearly read the posted signs straight on, it's private property. IF done according to what I understand is the law. Take that for what it's worth...

In most counties in NY, you can pull up the county tax maps, and the public or private rights of way can be identified by their description, and if there is a taxpayer listed in conjunction with said parcel. No specific taxpayer listed... then you are one of the taxpayers too.

I stopped at town hall in my town and was directed to the town engineer when I asked if there was a list/inventory of town roads. There is and he gladly gave me a list. I asked about funding and he said they get money from the state. I asked about access and he said if it's on the list it is open to vehicle (registered) traffic and can't be gated or chained to prevent access.

Not going to make Hoots, but I'll do the Rock Ride. I'm nervous about taking the engine apart to fix the starting issue and upgrade the oil pump gears. I'd hate to screw it up and not be ready.

You should have my number in your phone. Call when you get close so we can go out in a group. With my "roll chart" going south for the week I'll need someone to let me know when I'm off the grid.
