Not sure what happened. It seems like a beautiful area.

Salton sea was created by an accidental break in a Colorado levee. The valley filled, up, it was nice, resorts built. But the sun takes it's toll as there is no water coming into the Salton Sea.

Someday the valley floor will be exposed as a salt flat.

Actually, there is. The White River enters from the north and the Alamo and New Rivers enter from the south. The problem is that there is no outlet. This is compounded by the fact that both the New and Alamo Rivers are extremely polluted. The water in the Salton Sea evaporates which concentrates the pollutants in ever increasing amounts.

This is from the City of Calexico New River Committee:

"The flows in the New River channel at the border have been primarily agricultural, municipal and industrial sources of wastewater from Mexico.

The New River is an “Impaired Water Body” under the Clean Water Act and violates public health standards for every pollutant that is measured under the law.

2010 water samples continue to document fecal coliform, arsenic, ammonia, dissolved solids and selenium levels in excess of reporting thresholds and public health standards."

Thanx for the insights. A lot of birds in and around the water. I usually think that's a sign of somewhat safe water. I got close and there were dead fish every where. Another mystery. Unless there are pockets of tolerable water?? Dam shame.

Boten. A Chinese-built town just inside the Laos border. Government policy (Chinese) on casinos changed and it died overnight....

A new Chinese company has bought it and their few employees live in this 4 star hotel. We got a room for $9.

This is a brand new, never finished multi story building... 5 to 7 storeys high...

I just rode up the steps and through the open door.
