Hey wanted to show you guys this rack I have created for my own 06+ FZ1 that makes commuting easier. Its a billet rack and fender eliminator setup with mounting holes for a Monokey lug kit so that you can directly mount a Givi box to it.
They are on Ebay for $200

I have never tried hard boxes before. I didn't want to sink a bunch if money into HT or givi and find out I don't like them.

The PO of my house left behind several mil surp boxes so I decided to mount a pair up.

I went with SW MoTech racks. I contemplated building my own but I just didn't have the free time. They seem pretty solid and I have heard stories of horendously overloaded givi boxes so I am not too worried about the extra weight, time will tell.





They don't hurt the ride too severely. I can feel a bit more cross wind loading but I had that with soft bags too. The pegs will touch before the boxes do. I tilted the front if the boxes down to give a more streamlined front aspect. I think with them mounted level the front would build up to much air and the bike would wobbled as each side built up and dumped an air load.

I don't see these as a finally solution but rather a chance to test an idea.

I work for Twisted Throttle and ride a Gen1 (03). It is my second Gen1 as my first one met an untimely end. I run what we sell but would anyway as it is superior gear. This is the best shot I have of my bike with the top carrier and a TraX 38 liter ALU-Box on the top and a 37 liter on the side carrier (45 liter on the other side):



Here is a shot of the top carrier (called and ALU-RACK) on an 01-05 FZ1:

I'm on my second Gen 1. My first one was totaled and the only thing I considered to replace it with was another Gen 1. I love the bike. The motors on these are bullet-proof and bullet-like. The mid range on this motor right out of the box is incredible. I commute a lot and can put it anywhere almost before I even think it.

Plus, it is a lot of bike for a little money. I bought an '03 with 12,000 miles on it for $3,000 three years ago. Since then I have put oil and tires on it only. I think I've put around 15,000 miles on it since I bought it.

thanks for the reply and thoughts.

having returned to riding after a 35+ year lay-off, i've spent the last year on a kawasaki z750s (the z1000 baby brother).

i love the bike. quick, powerful, easy to ride, decent ergos.

(obviously compared to my previous 70s vintage yamaha rd350!)

i didn't winterize the z750s.

i forced myself to ride once a week all winter long just to keep up my skill level and to keep the bike rolling.

i LOVED the fuel injection in the cold.

darn, bike started up each and every time.

one area of concern of mine on the fz1 bikes is: gen1 vs gen2 ala carb vs fi.

since you are in rhode island, your winters are similar to mine.

have the carbs been a problem?

have you done an "ivan" or a pc mod?

i am not a wrench so the notion of removing the carbs to clean out the gummed up yuck or to tweak the needle floats is beyond me.

This. I bought an '02 a couple months ago and have been commuting on it daily, and it's just about the perfect tool for the job. Next up I'm outfitting it with racks to accept my 36L Caribou cases from my G650GS so I can start touring on it. I have a friend who's on his 3rd Gen 1 and I can see that happening to me as well.

I ride all winter too. Not weekly in the heart of the winter but as often as I can. The bike is a cold-blooded machine by nature. Both of mine need to be warmed up (on choke) in the cold for a fair amount of time (5 mins minimum) when it gets below 45 f.

The cards will not get gummed up if you are constantly running fuel through them. In the heart of the winter I maybe run the bike every two to three weeks and have never had an issue. If you're riding weekly there will be no issues.

If you plan to not ride the bike for sometime or put it away for the winter you can easily drain the carbs with an allen key. There is a small bolt on the float bowl. put a hose on the small nipple on the float bowl and open the bolt and the fuel will flow out. Since there is a fuel pump on this bike you will not need to turn off a petcock. Best part is when you do turn the bike back on later the pump will prime the carbs for you.

I have an Ivan kit in this one. I would suggest you let a pro put it in if you do it. I would also suggest doing it as well. It is the best upgrade you can do for your bike. Next thing is go to Twisted Throttle for all of your gear needs..... (Sorry couldn't help myself).

Last bike was a 2002 BMW R1150R. I now have a new 2012 FZ1 and am breaking it in (slowly). The FZ1 is a great bike if you have sporty intentions. Lots of guys use it to sport tour, but I'd say the emphasis is on the sport part of sport tour.

Bike is relatively light and wicked fast. You only need to fool with the fuel injection map if you put on a new exhaust or make other mods to the air/exhaust system. Very few real problems I am aware of other than keeping your drivers license. The Gen. II FZ1 thrives at 5-digit RPM levels, making most of its power above 8K RPM.

I like the bike and am sure I'll never be able to outride it.
