I happened to know exactly where that last tag was, and it was too close not to go snag it.

Is that 45? or 38? the new tag icon? I kind of thought you might snag that tag.

Motorcycles are actually not allowed on Sugarloaf, you know

Really nice spot though, especially today.

Next Stop

Just down the road from Sugarloaf.

This is Whites Ford, not to be confused with Whites Ferry, which is just a few miles down the river. Lots of Civil War crossing here. The sign out at the road for this is for the Dickerson Conservation Park.

I never quite understood the "no motorcycles" rules. Too many Harleys w/ loud pipes?
Either way, its not really an enforceable rule.

I asked a State Trooper neighbor once and he said that the No Bikes signs go back a long time. The way he talked, my guess is the bad old days of true choppers, loud pipes, hippies, and Peter Fonda movies.

It's actually private property (Stronghold Corp), so quite enforceable.

The Dickerson incinerator and the Coal power station (can't remember if it's Covanta or Mirant) are back there somewhere, I think that might a stack from one of the two.

What crime would you be charged with? Who would be citing you?

The real deal with sugarloaf.... Surgarloaf and nearby are designated horseback riding areas and so are there trails. Bikes and motorcycles are only permitted in the sections which the horse vs bike run in's so to speak are limiting (aka. the parking lot and the dirt/gravel road that runs west off of the mountain area, in which there is a parking lot for the horse trailers, etc).

Reasoning behind it.. Unless trained, most horses spook around motorcycles (they can't tell what it is and to them all they see is the bike and rider as one unit, a silhouette that roars) . The loud pipes tend to spook them all the more and apparently, that area had its fair share of people getting tossed off the horses due to these run-in's that they decided to close off the road to motorcyclist.

If I had to guess, both of you got away with your tag because of the lack of loud pipes, during the week and crummy weather. Had someone seen you, you probably would've been sited by the park police. The park was open to motorcyclist I believe 5yrs. ago or just about, so the rule is still rather new, however, boldly posted at the entrance of the road leading to the top. Nice pics though!

ps. no more illegal tags please. don't wanna get people in trouble nor poke the community into having yet another gripe towards motorcyclist. If ya get a speeding ticket like myself in route to a tag..that's your own damn fault

They use to train for olympics there in the kayaking course pre-ASCI built at the top of wisp ski resort in deep creek (which is now the new train facility). I've lived in this god forsaken state too long

The Stronghold property falls under the statutes for State Public Use, so you'll find Park Police (I've seen the bicycle cops) and my DNR neighbor is up there constantly. DNR is part of MD State Police & the county police also can provide enforcement. What specific statute would be up to the officer. Since your access permission is null when you violate the rules, I'd guess they could start with trespassing and go from there, but I'm not a LEO.
