Sidecar Project

I am seeking ideas and suggestions from all sidecar owners and builders as to the feasabiltiy of my proposed project....

I have a 2008 R1200GS..... I bought the wreck (only done 2,300 kms) after it was written off by the insurers. The engine and transmission are all ok. Not sure if the frame is straight, all electrics/electronics are ok.

So I would like to make a side car out of it.... with the following questons.

1. Front end leading link, having read some posts on this topic it seems the way to go?
2. Build a double sided swingarm for the rear?
3. Modify tranmission output to chain drive?
4. Home built sidecar vs purchase?
5. Where can I find design details on how to build sidecar?
6. Should I try to emulate the "Tuck Truck"?

1. Leading link is the way to go for a dedicated sidecar machine.
2. Dunno. Beyond my tech-ness.
3. Don't know why shaft wouldn't work for you but I don't know the bike. Mine is shaft.
4. You can get a Ural hack for pretty cheap. Easy to find. Easy to install.
5. Dunno.

Hi

First,throw away the original frame. It will NOT stand up to Australian conditions with a chair attached. Seeing as you got it so cheap you should spend the money getting a new frame made up with all the mounts for a sidecar built in. At the same time you can get the headstem made as per a normal bike. Hell of a lot easier to fit a leading link.

If you go this way let me know how much it cost you as that is exactly want I want to do but I dont want to buy a new/good secondhand one and then destroy a perfectly good frame/bike.

All depends on the intended use.

If you want to do the 'Tuck Truck' thing, I'd build a one-piece rolling chassis and hang the engine/gearbox in.

To get some ideas, check here; http://www.hu-sidecars.de/

For a chain drive, you'll have to fit a bevelbox straight behind the gearbox and fit a sprocket to it.
Then run the pivot of the swingarm in the center of the bevelbox to avoid excessive chain adjustments.

That's very good advice 3legs, certainly the way to go I think. Might be cost prohibitive but would make an excellent project.

Thanks for the comments and now to through something in from LEFT FIELD....

Seeing that we need to build a new (stronger) frame, what if we fitted the engine so the cyclinders are north/south and the output shaft then can be fitted with a sprocket?

It would certainly make it a unique unit .

I've seen a few racing sidecars with the BMW K motor set up like that. I have photos somewhere but not digitized...

If you set the cylinders in line with the wheels,I'd think cooling would be a problem. The beauty of the opposed cylinders on the air cooled BMW is that they are hanging out in the breeze.
