Peach, we understand about work as we all have to pay the fiddler one way or another. Priorities. Don't get burned out feeling you have to post all the time to satisfy our whimms. Be like Schwarzenegger "I'll be back" We'll be here.
On another note have you ever gone to Alcatraz? It's on my bucket list.

birthday ride 2011 cont'd

Dorky hat.
Check.
Dork in hat.
Check.
Dirty window.
Check.

Someone really needs to have a talk with the gardener and PG&E......

Shall we go see what lies past the town of Bodie??

NOTHING!

Well, almost nothing.....
This is headed east on the Bodie rd toward the Nevada state line.

Here is where I decide to tempt fate a little...
I had decided at the entrance gate to the park that I would ride to the state line, just for scuz.
I've been a little leery because I'm riding on a plugged rear tire and the PR2's, which are dynamite on the street, are more like a weak firecracker in the dirt.
ALSO, my active imagination starts to chime in.
Now there are a few thoughts and scenes from bad B horror movies running through my head.
A while back I saw a news show where a mountain lion attacked a cyclist out of no where in So Cal.
I never really gave it any thought, but what if there where mountain lions out here?

I saw these deer at the watering hole and thought if there was any real immanent danger, these guys would take off like a rocket.
So for a few moments, they were my solace..

The last ranger I saw was over an hour and a half ago in the park and there were no fresh tracks on the road.
The power poles that had old wires strung between them now had nothing and they, too, became less frequent.
I reached a point where the road started to get kind of munched and rutty
and knew if I dropped the bike or if I got hurt, I'd be SOL.
Now was not the place to test the hairline between bravery and stupidity.
Turn around time.
I knew I had made it close to the state line and was fine with that.
For now.
Only now, my front tire, turned, was locked in to a rut.
For a few seconds that felt like many minutes, I couldn't move forward or back.
I feared if I gassed it, just even a tiny bit too much, it could put me up the side of the hill and cause some instability
and since the front was down, backing up or rocking out was impossible.

Getting off and pushing was the next option, but my weak left shoulder and wrist I didn't trust.

My current goal was to not panic and to get my heart out of my throat.
The only real option was to gas it and go and pray to god I don't dump it.
What I did and do trust was my skill and what I do know about controlling the throttle, clutch and brake.
of course most of that goes out the window when your chest is pounding out of fear

I made it out fine, but a lot of things were dawning on me at a rapid pace..
There is a big difference between solitude and desolation.
While heading back in there alone was pretty tame less and somewhat safe,
No one really knew I was gone, A.
And B no one knew I was back there.
C, No Spot, No GPS, No cell service.
All the tools and gadgets in the world would be useless if you are alone & get knocked unconscious.
But there in lies the fun and drama of adventure.
Best coined as 'hope for the best, prepare for the worst'.

I've said it before and I'll say it again,
you learn more about yourself in 6 seconds past your comfort level than you do in 6 years of doing something mundane.
Why smart riders always carry an extra pair of shorts.

Let's roll back to town...

And leaving town........

Same road?

In the late 60's my first visit to Bodie was in my family's pickup/cabover camper along with my uncle and his family. We entered form Nevada, possibly on the same road. I remember it as a great adventure- my dad and uncle still talk about it and labeled it a "never again" road!

As always- great pics!

Could be the same road as it does come in from NV - state route 3 c I believe.

That would be awesome if you could find a picture!

DP, you did right by turning around on that road. It is pretty nasty country without some emergency supplies, a SPOT or even another rider.

hmmm... seems like i've been on the same road 'way back when' exploring ghost towns in a 4x4 pickup truck, probaby mid 1980's.
Came into Bodie the 'back way' from Nevada... possibly from Berlin NV. Note: Berlin and the Ichthyosaur monument is a great visit too. There are lots of old 'ghost town stuff' out there.

Berlin, Nevada Old stamp mill, housing etc.

Good thinking Peach. I've had the same thoughts with the Tiger before when I've been out in the middle of nowhere. Best not to get in a situation you can't get out of on a bike that size.

Your's is the only thread that I have had in my favorites list from the very beginning. It is epic, the stuff of legend. I don't mind the time between posts, quality not quantity. Great work.

After we reach 40, I believe we all start to become a bit wiser. It's funny how that works.
