On my 1150 Adventure the first driveshaft was replaced at 97,000 miles. The front joit was loose but not exploded.

The second driveshaft died at around 168,000 near redline in third gear.

That took out the swingarm as well.

There were no swingarms for 1150's in the US. No estimate on when. Cost new was in excess of $800 plus the $700 drive shaft.
A friend found two used swing arms from Ebay resellers. I got one for less than $200.

New to me

All better,

I was two miles from home and the asshat behind me passed me on the right forcing me into the triangle between the ramp and freeway when it all let loose.
I now pull the swinging arm off and the shaft and feel the u-joint every year, or about 20,000 miles. It's just cheaper that way.

There is evidence of cracks. I bought and installed another.
The "another" was free from visible problems.

All sorted now. Had to buy a new rear drive as the shaft into FD was bent.

could a dying shaft (increased resistance of U joint bearings thus increased vibrations) kill the wheel bearings?
I've noticed play in my rear wheel. This was not the case before the shaft crapped out on me once. Replaced the bearings 5k km's ago. Waiting for dealer to bring it in for a new shaft + seals.

I doubt it. Your just paying more attention to the amount of slop now that the driveshaft crapped out.

friend of mine had play on his rear wheel and metal in the oil. After he told me this i checked my rear wheel and was happy to find out there was no play in there. This was about 7k kms ago. A while before my driveshaft crapped out.

Good to know the chances of the one affecting the other are low.

At the end of last summer I noticed a vibration on my 09 GSA. I wrote it off as a tire ballance issue and rode thru the winter. The bike now has 39k on it and I spare no expense on it. I am planning a dual sport vacation this year and thought it would be a good idea to run the ESA in offroad max mode for a few weeks prior to my vacation to get use to the added ride height. As soon as I increased the angle on the para lever my vibration multiplied. Vibes in the foot pegs and the bars at 35 to 40 mph in 4th gear in offroad max was what it took for me to stop and say"wait a minute something's not right". I pulled the drive shaft and found the front unoint just starting to fail. I took the shaft to my local dealer and was told of the $1000 replacement shaft. Thank god for extended warranty's. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you have a GS with ESA and you pickup a vibration use it to check the unoints!

Try to get your old shaft back..they let me have mine after 60 days..(BMW NA didn't require it) So I have that one to rebuild and put servicable joints in..adn when I swap it..I'll have another as well..to fix up and sell.
