Undressing a 1987 BMW K100

Can it be done?

I want to take an 87 K100 and strip it down to a naked bike--make it look more like a R1150R style bike.

Does anyone here know if this fairing can be removed in a relatively clean way?

Thanks.

Sure, they're both the same bikes anyway. The parts are still available if you have the money. The main obstacle is mounting an alternate headlight if you go custom.

IVe just done this with a 1993 K1100RS.....

it now has K100RS side panels, R65 headlight, aftermarket headlight ears and front indicators, a Honda-sourced Renthal handlebars and R1100 mirrors.

Was easy to do - I also replaced the front brake lines and ripped out the ABS (ways over 15kg!!!!) and put in braided stainless steel. It was an easy job.

Bike is now at least 40-50kg lighter, all round.

I'll post some pics when I can.

My neighbors is that model I think and it's nekkid. Looks better IMO, but that's very subjective to me since those bikes do nothing for me.

There are all sorts of options.

1) Get the headlight and turn signals from a "naked" K100 like the pic you posted.

2) Put a K75C fairing on it:

3) There lots of aftermarket small streefighter fairings out there with headlight and blinkers.

Here's a link to a write-up I did on how to remove a K75RT fairing. Yours is virtually identical so you should find this helpful:
http://www.ibmwr.org/ktech/rt-fairin..._fairing.shtml

Don't know how picky you are about appearance but once the fairing is removed there will most likely be wear marks on the gas tank and valve/cam covers from the fairing rubbing against them.

Thanks for all the replies! Excellent news, thanks. I've never been a huge fan of that bike either, but I love the K motors and they aren't too expensive. I'm not worried about fairing lines, etc or even finding aftermarket gear for the bike. There's just no way I'd buy that bike with it looking the way it does stock (looks like a sad, dying cobra snake).

I love the look of it naked, love the K motor (esp how it looks sitting at the bottom of that chassis like it owns the joint), and the ride.

Thanks again!

Steven

Can you point my browser to some of these streetfighter fairings, or should I just do a search on fleabay?

Thanks,

Steven

The full fairing like shown on the K100, or the small K75C fairing like on the black bike (above)?

The fairing I have is like the silver K100, not the K75C fairing.

How about this

Saw this a week ago. I do not know this guy or have any interest in the selling of this bike.

I was considering making a K100 streetfighter out of a wrecked bike and considered the Acerbis Cyclops. It gets down to personal taste though.

Not sure if they exist but I think a DOT approved HID headlight streetfighter setup would be the cat's meow.

I just sold some parts to the owner of this bike:

Note that that bike above is a 4 valve K1100RS. If you like to ride hard then you'd probably be better off with the 4 valve K1100 since it has: 10 more hp, MUCH better four piston front brake calipers with floating rotors and a paralever final drive instead of monolever. Most of them also have ABS.

IMO the K100RS4V was a sweet looking bike. I built the one below from three crashed bikes:
