BTW, I went by the Alb County Offices today and they don't have those VDOT maps any more.
They can be ordered as we said before but I also imagine you can pick them up in a VDOT office. Culpeper District: 540-829-7500 1601 Orange Road Culpeper, VA 22701 Culpeper district includes Albemarle, Culpeper, Fauquier, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Orange and Rappahannock Counties. They might have them. Worth a call.

Cool. I'd like to put together an all-dirt-road ride when the weather warms up. A day long ride.
Meet somewhere that has good breakfast stuff (I understand this may be difficult for Earlys-ville riders ) Ride to a good lunch spot and then some more riding to end with a good dinner (or may be some one can fire up a barbie) Anyone interested?

I love the plan to ride from breakfast to lunch to dinner!!! That's about the best day plan yet! And yes ... a "good" breakfast spot would be nice. You're right, we don't have anything like that in Earlysville ... well, except at my house. ;)

I have some of those old county maps too but am thinking that the topo Gazeteer books are labeled either paved, all-weather, or gravel, or ccc jeep trails. You can also pick up specific topos at the forestry department over there off of Fontaine I think and they are very detailed and the type of roads are labeled. I use them to bust over toward highland county and that area via dirt roads.

It was crazier last night too! I was worried about cleaning up trees and shingles from the roof this morning... fortunately not more than a few branches down ... definitely not on the bike today ... working from my nice warm home and having an extra cup of coffee here

Days like this over here at the foot of the ridge I get to watch chairs and things blow off my porches.
Not much sense in going to retrieve them until tomorrow...

Hello everyone. I wanted to introduce myself and ask a few questions. I've been in C-ville for about 4 years, currently riding an old beat up EX500. I have a little dirt experience when I was a kid, but not on bigger bikes. Anyway, I'm in a position for the first time in my life to spend a bit of money and get a new bike. I'm really torn whether to get something that is a strict road bike vs. something with a little more dirt bias. I'm not real sure how many options for dirt/gravel/fire road riding there is around here, but looks like a decent amount from this thread. I've narrowed it down to range of bikes in ascending order of dirt worthiness: R1200R, Tiger 800, Tiger 800 xc, KTM 990 adventure. I'd also considered R1200GS, but probably a bit more than I want to spend after accessories and maybe a bit large for my taste (I'm 5'9 155lbs). So far I've test-ridden the tiger 800s down at Frontline in Christiansburg. I really liked both of them (standard and XC), probably felt a little more at home on the XC, but the standard was definitely more nimble on pavement. I plan to ride the others too, if the nearest dealers ever get back to me with opportunities. All would make pretty decent tourers/all-arounders. I would appreciate any thoughts you all may have about how these would perform on the roads in the area. Hope this isn't too newbish of a post, but kind of torn on this.
Thanks. |

FSH,
If you're looking at BMW check out the folks at Mortons in Fredericksburg. (I know them and they're good folks) If you're looking at KTM try JT Motorsports in Frederick, MD or Motofactory in NOVA (they also have Husky and 'Berg). I'd be happy to talk with you about my 950. I've been here all my life and there's alot of good off road riding here. To me a 950 is nearly perfect. I have no reservations about playing on a track or fire road OR loading up and heading to Key West.
