Yes they look quite good.

Of course, acquiring rok straps would mean a trip to Fleet Farm, so it might be worth getting some just for the excuse to wander round there.

Well, there's that then. I cannot just pop into FF for any one item. A trip to FF requires wandering about and often results in purchasing items that I had not intended to purchase. And they have a decent selection of camping stuff.

You did fine there. That Ortlieb duffle is sometimes the only bag I pack, say for Mexico. The end-loaders work fine, too. Loops for straps are not really necessary, although they can come in handy.

There are a couple of the Helen bags in my stash, too, and they work too. They both came to me as rally door-prizes. One came to me direct from the eponymous Ms. Wheels ("... and speaking of old bags, our next prize is..."), who would be a formidable adversary in a tent-wrestle.

The bright bags and Aerostich riding suits make a striking impression; a group of BMWs on tour looks like a line of Playmobil or Lego men on their bikes, all alike except for the variation in primary colors. (As the writer to the editor of Cycle World once asked: "What's the deal with those cordura uniforms the BMW riders all wear?")

I agree. On many bags I have seen (but not all certainly) they look more like a weak point in the concept, where they could easily tear if over tensioned - or as a result of normal vibratory experiences (these are designs where the loop is simply sewn to the side of the bag, rather than being on a piece of webbing that encircles the bag properly). Two decent straps around a bag is usually enough.

The Ms Wheels bags do look good, I was previously unaware of them. If I need more or replacement bags I will look into those, but I am impressed by the quality of these items I picked up. They seem very rugged.

I chose the particular Ortlieb because it looked like that's what dfc had on his Transalp in a picture a while ago, and he's fabbo, so it must be good.
