Andy, I've heard a lot of good stuff about the big DR650s. I owned a great grandad to the DR650, a 1982 Suzuki SP500. SP stood for "Street Practical", and they were a pretty good dual sport bike-except for having the worst seat I ever experienced!!

I've owned some big bikes, but the last 10 years or so, I found out I can still have loads of fun on the smaller ones too (Klr250, XT225, etc). Hopefully, the little DR200, after the break in, would be up for some rides to Hilo. Maybe there is some back road routes that would get me from HPP to Hilo. On a map I have, it looks like Railroad Ave goes through, but some folks told me that some of that is private property, and that I wouldn't be welcomed riding through.

Take care, Jon
You should have no trouble riding the DR200 from HPP to anywhere on the island on the road. Mine would carry my fat ass up to about 70 mph, and the former owner used to commute from Pahala to Hilo on a regular basis.

Railroad Ave does go through, but it is/was gated off at the private property. Give me a call when you're here, if you have a bit of free time and I can maybe help you with some of the ins and outs of "legal" off road riding here on the BI. As a State DLNR Enforcement Officer, I do have some knowledge that may be helpful.

Aloha, Andy

moving out to Oahu again. (last time was 6 years ago, short term, no bike)
This time I want to have a bike out there. trying to ship out my DR 650 from boston. trying to weigh out if it is better to get a cheap bike on the island, or ship mine out. So far lowest quote is $1200. ahhhhhh way too much.
Any folks have good luck with shipping their bikes to Hawaii from the mainland?
Look forward to coming out!

BIDSA Ride 8 Aug

Sunday's ride was all time from my Video Beyotch perspective! Gasser sent me a couple of images I thought I should share:

Vagisil Hill:

And Pahoehoe Punishment:

Rewarded with BBQ embelishment:

Had a MK400 returnee come from Maui as well as 8 or so local riders, it had just stopped raining in Hilo around the link-up time, for those that couldn't make it.... swing by Vagisil Hill for your treatment....

Jeremy

It's doing great out here. The dr650 in my opinion is a great bike for the city and for the stix of Oahu. I like it because it is sure as hell lighter and more nimble then the KLR and that makes it great for the city stop n' go out here. I live in Makiki ( the city/ university area) and i am happy that i can literally hop off the bike and with a good heave, bump it up and over a curb, step, etc etc.......for quick parking.

My only critique for my bike is its MPG. I am getting around 36mpg and I am seeing stations out here selling gas for about 3.35-3.38 (regular 87 octane) and the cheapest has been 3.31. So i am not getting more that 91 miles before hitting reserve and getting about 114 miles in total.

I am trying to rectify this issue soon.

when are you coming out here Jeremy? good luck with the move!

Thanks,
Yeah, love my 650! 36 mpg seems a little low. I usually get 120 miles then hit reserve. Bike is stock.
Coming out on Sept 27th!
Trying to sell my BMW R90/6 so I can ship out the DR. shipping is not cheap so far.......yikes. Really want to bring the bike this time out.
Hope to bump into you soon.
Mahalo,
Jeremy

Let me know when so I can have the camera all charged up and let my buddy at the Pahoa Fire Dept. get the ambulance warmed up, riding up that would make Evil's try at Snake River look foofoo..... Hell, I'll ask them to let the "Pastor" from the Cannabis Ministry out of the slammer so he can administer the appropriate rites before you pop the clutch!!!!

The Puna 4WD Rock & Root Hell Road

Video cam up date

After many let downs with my un-reliable battery sucking GoPro vid cam, I bought a new EPIC helmet mounted vid cam with a simple menu on a big LCD screen with big button that click so you know if it's on or off without having to look, dudes I was a happy puppy working this old "geezer proof" video cam.

I mounted it on the right side of my bitchen KLIM air-conditioned helmet, tied a lanyard on it and zip tied the release clip to make it Hawaii jungle bullet proof.

Too test it out I blitz down the roughest nastiest wet slippery rock an root infested one mile long fisherman's 4WD two track suspension pumping road Puna has to offer...wanting a exciting video, the KTM and I were in sync on the gas in 3rd gear ricocheting off what ever was there for the Race Tech suspension suck up...everything was cool till just near the end of the road the front tire flipped up a loose rock that the rear tire rolled off pitching me sideways up an incline into the Guava trees where I fell backwards pinning booth boots under the rear wheel as I laid on my back a downward slope...the crash pulled the bite valve off my water supply soaking me as I struggled for a few minutes to get freed...didn't get hurt cause I ware all the right gear for riding in the lava rocks.

Crashing gets me pissed off making me go faster than the crash I just did...this works...it's like the hard way to warm up.

So cool I thought, hey! this will make for some good video shit, I laced up 85 more miles of Puna pounding rocks, calling it a day gassing it home to down load my ride...yup you guessed it, the EPIC cam let down, the freaking video would not play on either of my media players, the sound was there but no video! needless to say I was pissssssed because the GoPro did this to me several times...duh WTF!...I'll get it hoop jumping sorted out, but an old geezer like me don't like jumping through digital hoop's.
