Wicked SECRET RIDE X the poseurs dream ride

The poseurs dream ride

Creatively qualifying the SECRET TRAIL X RIDE

I cut some new trail yesterday in the ????????? jungle area macheteing through chest deep Lantana/Guava/Pilau vine tangles linking up mini thick over grown wild Guava tree groves.

I had to tag every 15 feet with pink ribbon just to keep track of where I was, pigs were running through the bush ahead as I macheted my way through.

This will be an energy demanding 1/4+ mile trail section because I put in many 90 and 120 degree turns one after the other serpentining it through old, old Guava trees on a thick bed of spongy slippery leaves keeping the trail just handle barwide...the trees have a 1, 3, 6, inch girth, so there's no bending them aside, having to wiggle the handle bars through...it's dark and wet in there with an abundance of mosquito's to be inhaled when the going gets tough, and that can be right from the start if yor not pump'en iron now! ...it will gulp be 450 makeable. ya right dude!

I got another pink panty section like it down the road a bit in a much rougher terrain, the Guava's are growing on green moss covered a'a' the riders will encounter...I will lace up as much trail in there as I can stumble trough...man it's torrid humid in these jungles, after 4 hr in there I'm a whipped puppy looking to drive all the way back home to Hilo for a few cold Stinelager's. just say'en

Also I got a 300+ ft elevation forest/jungle covered cinder cone I'm going to re-con next week to see if I can put a few technical hill climbs up and down it...just getting to the cone is a tough a'a' pahoehoe trials type ride. 450 makeable. ya right MF

I go light as possible when rough-cut re-coning this shit...I will bring my camera to take pictures when I go back to fix some radical do or die spots. ya right haoli boy

Disclamer>These will be the woosyist poseur Big Island Dual-Sport trails yet.

Southest US thumper & Sfront would maybe go!

No excuse needed!
Take it out and blow the cobwebs out of it!
You know I don't mind.
Besides......when we do make it back, I'm gonna have to try out the Scorpa

I was thinking more of excuses for the ride..... My mother in law's sister's nail trimmer is in town, my goggles are at the cleaner, the shoe goo I bought was solidified, The King and I are.... etc. etc. etc.

Speaking of Scorpa, I put the actual Trials Tank on it over the weekend, had to fill it full of boiling water to get it to loosen up and fit properly, rode a couple of hours today up in the OHV park hitting everything that looked like it could be an obstacle.. The park is getting old.... Boring... Tired....

Got rained out for the ride with Gasser, I'll still hound him for a target date though!

Yo StevOmondO
SECRET RIDE X date has been officially set for Sunday Nov 21st leaving out of Big Island Power Sports parking lot @ 8:30 #.

There will also be a BBQ at the end of this ride.

I walked and tagged the final (of 11) SECRET TRAIL X trail sections Friday...man it was hot, the sweat was dripping off my hat brim...I had to ribbon every 20 feet just to keep track where I was...even then when I would look back I couldn't find the ribbons I just tied because the terrain undulates up an down radically in tall orchids and grass...it was hard just to pick a walking line to a target and stick to it because of the obstacles hidden in the tall grass that I would have to detour...each step was a very cautious one, twice I dropped down to the scrotum sack level because of wide deep cracks that one wedged my boot tightly into having to do some serious tugging to get it out...there's few straight lines in these trail sections, but hey! there's no lack of traction because your going to need it to span big cracks and tall square step up's...but then I could just be bullshitting you for the Hawaiian "chicken skin" effect.

The grunt and I are going to Bronco bust inn the new trails Sunday to see if there....'gulp'....rideable.
I may mount the GoPro helmet cam on backwards to LOL catch the gruntster do some horizontal parking and the EPIC cam forward to keep track how many times I do some organic plant & rock sampling.

What you need to do to gear up for this ride is lathe up a miniature fannypack friendly titanium comealong with 20 feet of cable and a chrome Sky Hook receptor eyelet for the handle bar's for when the trail turns into "da kine" bad puppy...then again I may just be chicken skin bullshit bench racing...sorry man it's hard for me to take reality serious anymore at my age.

Devious bastad... G let's me know that he and some other folks are going to work on the trails and asks if I'm game. D'uh!!! I'm always available to learn the secret moves, cracks, boulders, and bypasses!!!

Show up at the appointed place and time, he slides into my truck and gives me a blindfold "Get in back and put this on, Now!" Pretty extreme but I want to see these trails, slip in the back and am blinded, we ride for what seems an hour (possibly in circles) and then stop at the top of an old sugarcane road, other than his 200, nobody else is around. "Put your gear on and let some air out of your tires, we ride in three minutes so be ready!" The Deliverance banjo music starts to play in my head, we're in BFE and there's no cell coverage!

It was a pounding of epic proportions!!! Serious tight sections, loose rock, hidden drop-offs and nasty vines all about. I fell at least three times (I'd watch my Gopro footage but G pulled the card and crushed it under his boot!). All I know is we covered 9 miles in three hours and I was smoked at the end of the ride!

"Go down this road for .2 miles and turn left, your truck is .4 miles up that road, see you on the 21st ya chump." and then he took off in a swirl of Castrol Pre-Mix.....

One of these days I'm getting even with that Pr&*k!!!

Song of the Off Road Gambler

'Song of the Off Road Gambler'

On a hot humid Hawaiian Sunday
On a Dual-Sport trail bound to nowhere
I met up with the trail 69 gambler
We were both tired out from the ride
`

So we took turns a-starin'
At the nasty lava trail in the hot Sun
As fear overtook me, he began to speak
`

He said, “Son, I've made a life
Out of ridin' on Hawaii’s lava trails
Knowin' where the rock’s and log’s are
By the way their hidin' in the weed’s
`

So if you don't mind my sayin'
I can see you’ve crashed your bike a’ lot
For a taste of your Granola bar
I'll give you some advice"
`

So I handed him my last Granola bar
And he gulped it down in one swallow
Then he bummed my new spark plug
And asked if I also had the wrench
`

And the day got deathly quiet
And his faced lost all expression
He said, "If you're gonna ride Gasser’s trails boy
You gotta learn to go faster than the crash!
`

You've got to know when to gass 'em
Know when to clutch 'em
Know when to shift 'em
Know when to wheelie
`

You never spin your knobby
When you're climbing that Mud Lane hill
There'll be time enough for benchrace ’en
When the riden’s done
`

Every off road rider knows
That the secret to survivin'
Is knowin' what weight to throw away
And knowin' what to keep
`

'Cause every heavy throttle hand's a winner
And every hard to pull clutch hand's a loser
And the best that you can hope for
Is no broken bones, so nights you can sleep"
`

And when he finished speakin'
He turned back toward the off road trail
Switched on his helmet cam
And faded off into the Ironwood trees an brush
`

Somewhere on Hawaii's Big Island wicked trails
The Dual-Sport rider he broke even
And in his final words
I found ridin' tips that I could keep
`

You've got to know when to brake slid 'em
Know when to wheelie 'em
Know when to walk 'em down
And know when to haul freaking ass
`

You better count your time and mileage
When you're racing in the Mauna Kea 200
There'll be time enough for benchrace ’en
When you’ve passed ’um all, an it’s done
`

You've got to know when to gass 'em
Know when to pass 'em
Know when to dust 'em out
And know when to have fun
`

You better count your entry fee money
When you're sittin' at the signup table
There won’t be time enough for re-countin'
When the race has begun
`

You've got to know when to speed shift 'em
Know when to crank 'em WFO
Know what big log’s to be jump 'en
And know when to have fun
`

You never brag about your trophies
When you're sittin' at the beer table
There'll be time enough for benchrace ’en
When the Mauna Kea 200’s done

~Gasser~

Secret Trails Redeux

Rode with Gasser to help clear the route a bit more today, since I'm the only guy that knows where the trails are I'll be pulling Tail End Charlie in a couple of weeks... Weather was WAY Overcast and wet, we made so much better time today compared to the Sweat Fest Broiling ride we did a couple of weeks ago, Hell, I actually enojyed myself!

B4 Leaving his house I elected to put only half a gallon in the tank, hit reserve 18 miles later and we were far from home (Didn't realise we were riding more than the tuff stuff and I wanted less top weight to make my life easier). If nuthin else I now have a much better idea on how far that WR250F will go on Reserve. Gotta gaet a new sharkfin, busted the one that bolts to the brake caliper carrier, Scotts will be on the order tonight!!! How I get myself into these "Let's check it out!" rides is beyond me....

The Secret ride is gonna be a fricken HOOT!

Kaua'i?

Anyone on Kaua'i?

I just got a lead on a possible job opportunity next year. I've been on The Continent for 10 years now, getting the kids through school. The younger one will graduate high school in June. Coming home would be great. Coming to Kaua'i would be sweet!

Any good off-road left on the Island? I'm thinking much of the haul roads are gone now. What's out there?

Mahalos plenny,

doc
