Rupp Minibikes

I had one. Little Tecumseh engine. Man, that thing was fun. Pull started first time, every time.

Did anyone else have a Rupp?

Sadly, I grew up in Delaware Country, so unlike the elites in Bucks County, we had to settle for the cheap Cat brand minibikes.

Delco is where Bucks stores it's "old money".

First minibike I ever rode.

3.5 hp.

Belonged to my neighbor.

I rode it into the curb and broke the front fork in half.

In 6th grade my friend had a mini bike with a Hodaka 100cc engine on it, think it was a Bonanza brand. I really really wanted one but we didn't have much money. Only way I could have one was build it myself. Bought one of those $18.95 "arc welders" from an ad in the back of Popular Mechanics magazine, a few pieces of 3/4" electrical conduit, and went to work. I put a Vespa 160cc engine on it and that thing would do almost 70 mph. It's a wonder I didn't kill myself. No front brake, homemade front forks, but it was by far the fastest mini bike in the neighborhood.

Yupp I had a Rupp.
It was my first bike.
I liked that it had a "real" gas tank.
I was too little and couldn't pull the starter.
My dad found a kickstart conversion kit.
It kicked forward , but at least I could start it myself.

I used to go to...sears? JC Penny?...can't remember which....but they used to have the mini bikes and go-karts in the automotive/tire section in the 70's. My parents would shop, and I'd stand there and stare at them (not allowed to sit on 'em) for the entire time.

Ended up with a Z-50 that my cousin had outgrown.

I remember the Rupp with the gas tank was the superduper cool one. So was the one that had spoked wheels. I didn't dare to dream about the hondas and yamahas at that point.

Yep, don't remember the model. But it had a 5hp motor, a belt from the engine to swingarm pivot, and a chain from there on back. With a tight belt and light 12 year old it would wheelie...woohoo!!!!

Speaking of Bonanza, a kid in town had a Bonanza with the Hodaka motor. I thought he was the coolest kid on that bike. He ranted and raved about it, he let me put around on it.

Then he got the first ever Honda XR75. He was sold, and the Bonanza sat and rotted. My folks wouldn't let me buy it from him, I am sure I could have talked his father into selling it to me.

We were all of 13 tto 14 years old.
