FT500 Ascot engine noise

Wanted to see if anyone could tell me what's making a noise in the top end of my FT's engine. It only taps when cold and as it warms up the noise will stop and start again abruptly until it goes away entirely. Once it's hot, it goes away entirely until the next cold start. Listening with a stethoscope, the noise is loudest at the tach drive end of the cam. I bought it earlier this year and the noise was present then so no information available on when it started.

I've had the valve cover off. One rocker is slightly pitted. I have the shop manual and going by that, the cam chain "should" be good as the measurement at the top of the tensioner is toward the "new" end. I didn't see any obvious problems other than the rocker arm pad pitting, which is very minimal. I ran it for about 20 miles and drained the oil looking for metal debris (assuming it was the camchain) and it was perfectly clean. It has 26k miles.

In the video, it starts out quiet then the noise comes in a few times.

sounds like a valve. perhaps the compression release is faulty and contacting the exhaust rocker?

no compression release on the FT but could a sticking valve make that noise without affecting the idle?

Have you tried cleaning the oil screen? You have to pull the left side cover to get to it. If there is a lot of crud on the screen it would restrict the oil flow to the top end when the oil is cold, then one the oil warms up more oil would flow through.

I'll try the two ideas this weekend and see if it's one of them. If I don't find something soon, I'm going to pull the engine out for inspection. I'll need to deal with the pitted rocker eventually anyway before it wipes the cam.

Any chance that the cam chain auto-tensioner could be malfunctioning?
