Re Sniper's comment about the tacticool look, I totally agree. I saw a guy at the range a couple of months back who had a Marlin lever-action of some kind, I think it was an 1894 in 44 Mag, and he had an Eotech mounted on it. Looked really funky, although it seemed to work just fine!

I have seen a red dot on many old lever guns and they do work! Look so funky indeed though! I think the worst one of "those" was a guy at the bow shop with a Acog looking knock off on a BOW trying to get it to work......I asked him how he was going to range with it, and he just looked at me like "well, I didn't really think of that yet...".

This "tacticool" fad is just that, a fad for folks who probably never carried real tactical gear in their lives. Given what I have shot in the past and what I have on hand now the most "cool" rifle would be a nice M1 Garand. Just the box stock rifle preferably in .308 rather than the original 30-06 or 30 Govt. would be plenty tactical for me. I don't need fancy lasers or flashlights on it.

If I need a scope I'll sit back with my old fashioned bolt action Ruger 77 with it's 20 power scope and plink from 500 to 1000 yards away.

For me function trumps looks any day.

I agree, but although I have a Garand in .30-06, I prefer my M1-A in .308.

I second this one. I have a basic, unadorned M1A in 308 and have long declared that if I could only have one rifle, that would be the one I'd keep. I admit that I've never shot a Garand, although I have handled them. The biggest difference I see between the Garand and the M1A, aside from caliber, is the ability of the latter to accommodate detachable magazines, and that's a nice feature IMHO. The M1A also seems lighter and more graceful to me, although I have never specifically compared the respective weights of the two.

I just checked on the weight issue and learned that a basic Garand weighs 9lb. 8oz., and an M1A is 9lb.3oz, so only a 5 ounce difference. And once you insert a loaded 20 round mag into the M1A it's going to weigh more than a fully loaded Garand by a few ounces. But somehow the balance of the gun and maybe the dimensions of the stock make the M1A, to me, seem a little more quick handling.

It is all in the distribution of weight....M14 is way more easy to swppe so feels much lighter than a Garand.

Actually I have shot both extensively casually and in service rifle competition, and there really is not that much difference between them. It amounts to a slightly more muzzle heavy feel in the M1, as the gas system is heavier, and all the way out to the muzzle, and it is a bit longer, too. I guess this is why the M1-A swings a bit better.

Every time I shoot the M1-A it is like shaking hands with an old friend, or putting on the most comfortable old shoes that you own. That said, I really do enjoy shooting the Garand, too.

I am sorry, I have not been on the site in a few days.. Way too much work... I purchased this through Aim Surplus.. This is one of the $69 hand selects. I think it would be around $80 total if you include shipping.

My Fathers was one of the Out of the box unissues they have. It was $130 shipped and was brand new....from 1942 This Below is one of the beaters :) I have put 50 or so surp through mine so far. My shoulder hurts......But its still a damn fine shot.

I feel exactly the same- in reverse. Every time I handle my Garand, it feels natural. It comes right to eye, shoots soft and makes me look like I know what I'm doing. Of course, I enjoy the M-1A's as well.
