Just wondering if anyone has heard if the Coonan 357mag is being put into production again.

Would love one.
Cheers.

What does the "spent shell casing" mean?

Like no revolvers?

No, it means a fired shell casing is included in the box with the pistol. I think it's supposed to be given to local LE for tracing.... Not that that works, IIRC, but it makes the antis feel good.

So that's why my S&W 329PD came with a shell casing. I was wondering about that - thought maybe it was evidence they proof fired it or something.

Yeah, I just bought an LCP today, had a casing in there. It was in an envelope with a guy's name signed on it. I thought maybe it was some kind of a proof of inspection / test fire?

1911fan is correct. The casing is supposed to be sent to the leo's for later tracking.

When I bought my last 9mm I lived in NM and they did not care or track them. He told me throw it away when I get home. I had asked an officer friend about it and he stated that some states will keep them, but the fact that I purchased the gun legally they do not worry about it.

Later found out this is because as soon as you purchase all your info and the serial are sent to "their" database. Don't know who "they" are, but I guess they have the purchasing ID and weapon serial of everything sold at a store going many years back.

Or at least that's what I've been told. And yes it was by persons that WOULD know.

Went to the local Fort Lauderdale gun show today.
Lots of black rifles and auto pistols.
Lots of people asking silly questions of the retailers over heard.
Did find a few real wood furniture rifles in .308 and 30-06.
Some revolvers but very expensive.
Local pawn shops are a better deal IMHO.
Prices are on an upswing, get'em while you can is my advice.

in NY every new pistol must have a spent shell casing to be submitted to the state police. if the manufactor does not supply it then your gun shop/FFL must take the gun to an approved firing range to fire the gun and get the spent casing. i am not sure if the gun shop/FFL fires the gun or if the state police have to do it. none of this is needed if you buy a used pistol.

Some recent additions to the collection.

Marlin 925M .22 Mag. Bought this because the wife encountered a coyote fairly close to the barn last fall. Of course we've not seen a coyote since I bought the rifle. Surpisingly good shooter for the money (about $250). I'm shooting 1" groups at about 100-120 yds with a cheapo simmons 4X scope. Guess that makes it an MOA rifle. Actually the rifle can probably do better, but I can't.

Sig Sauer P238 .380. Very nice shooting little gun. Very little recoil and surprisingly accurate for such a small gun.

Ruger GP100 4" .357 Magnum along with a New Vaquero in .45 Colt that I've had for several years. Was seriously thinking about a Redhawk in .45 Colt or a S&W Model 29 in .44 Mag but the GP100 in .357 seemed more practical for my purposes. I'm already loading up some XTP ammo for it.

I thought they could trace the bullet, but what use is the spent casing? I missed that episode of CSI.

I'd imagine they're interested in firing pin and chamber witness marks.

Right. And semi-autos also leave distinctive extractor marks on brass.

What's to stop the purchaser from sending in a casing from another firearm of the same caliber?

I think it's supposed to be the dealer that removes it and sends it in as part of the transaction.
