I don't know why but it just sounds wrong. We have the Colt SA in just about anything the same with the 1911. But a Schofield .357? Hell if I ever saw one I would most likley buy the damn thing.

Yeah, I was surprised to find that the only two repro manufacturers decided on .38spl in stead of. .357/.38 setup.

I'd definitely go .45 if it were cheaper.

Man, I'm totally speechless. What?...how?...who?...!

I'm going to have to get my bow out and draw it few times. I'll be OK as soon as I can get my brain untangled.

While it appears that there is some divergent opinion on this question, I will chime in with a "no". My reasoning is this: the 1873 Schofield revolver was chambered in 45 Schofield cartridge, but in neither 38 Spl. nor 45 "Long" (sic) Colt. One is no more an abomination than the other!!

I never understood why the Dardick never caught on.

And that really is a great advertisement.

357 runs well over 30000psi chamber pressures, 45 long colt and 38 are down nearer 15000. Not to say that metallurgy doesnt exist to cope with 357 in the design, but it doesn't surprise me they didn't want to bother in a gun that almost certainly has no self defense or carry market appeal. 38 is a better choice for a plinker.

Good point.

I just assumed the metallurgy would be on par with modern revolvers to withstand such pressures.

I think that the metallurgy of the new reproductions is fine, it's the basic design of the Schofield that is the problem, with the hinged break-open frame. I suspect it would loosen up in short order with 357s. The instructions that came with my Uberti in 45 Colt call for checking the screws quite frequently.
