Looks like a cheap way of getting into something that approximates .50BMG for shorter distances (I assume). I can't seem to find any info on that cartridge.

Doubt it approximates a 50 BMG, remember the 50 bmg necks down to the 50 caliber bullet. (1/2") this seems to be a slightly tapered 12 gauge brass hull, which means the bullet is quite a bit above 1/2", since a 20 gauge is .68" or so.

Seems more like a way to get in the realm of the old school cape buffalo gun.

Actually, it was something I found on a machinist forum. Some of those monkeys are turning 20mm cases into 4 bore slug throwers. Seems it isn't a destructive device if it is a shotgun bore. I guess the 700NE wasn't enough punishment.

Either A. Barrel obstruction. This happens to people who accidently ram their muzzle into the ground while hiking and don't notice.

or B. Metal failed and ruptured. Sako had a few do this in their light taper stainless barrels due to a bad patch of coolant. Others have it happen when they accidentally drop too high a charge or use a heavier weight bullet than they meant to while handloading.

It was totally a barrel obstruction. No other possible cause for that classic banana-peel effect. A metal failure would have occurred at the chamber, and would be much more dangerous.

looks like a squib round wasn't cleared from the bore...

Squib. But he looked to have trouble chambering that round also.

Its hard to combat squibs when you load on a progressive machine, tricky to verify powder charges on the cycle, and time consuming to individually weigh each cartridge after loading.

Makes me glad I load shotshells and shoot break actions, I can always look down my bores.

Squibs in pistols are scary, but rarely end up in anything worse than a ringed barrel. Squibs in rifles are catastrophic. The guy in that video is lucky that he didn't have to be carried off the mountain bleeding profusely.

It could have been a squib. However, I am more inclined to suspect a plugged bore based on the way the barrel banana-peeled. A squib round usually doesn't get very far down the barrel, a couple of inches or so. If that were the case the barrel would have ruptured much further back, just forward of the chamber. I'm betting that the hunter stumbled and shoved the muzzle into the mud at some point.

The split starts a little far back in the barrel and close to the action for it to be an obstruction in the barrel.

I would venture a guess that there was an improper powder used in the cartridge.

If it had been an obstruction there would have been more evidence of bulging of the barrel rather than the clean split.
